I hate how Brits and Irish pronounce "Los Angeles" where "Angeles" rhymes with "sleaze."

I could see if English wasn't their first language or they weren't familiar with how the city is actually pronounced but let's be honest, Los Angeles is one of the most famous cities in the world. Every other American movie or show is set there with people pronouncing the name correctly. Where did the "sleaze" pronunciation come from? And why are they continuing it?

BF has informed me that it's not uncommon in the North-East US to say it that way, though most people say "L.A." It's more likely a pronunciation resulting from an unfamiliarity with Spanish rather than English, though.

Being an East Coaster with family all up and down the coast I have never heard any American call Los Angeles "Los Angeleaze."

I'm from the northeast US and I've never heard anyone use that pronunciation in my life.

Um, Los Angeles isn't famous enough for every single person of English speaking countries ever to have heard of it, let alone know how to say it 'properly'. So, no, there's no 'I could see if English wasn't their first language' about it. If you've never heard it said before, you're not going to know. End of.

Plus, I'm British, and I pronounce it Angulis. I don't even know what the correct way is. Angelease is too long a pronunciation, though, 'cause my accent is a lazy one :P

I don't exactly pay attention to American locations in movies...thinking about, I would try to say it was...Loss...Angels? Loss ann-jeh-less? since leeze isn't an option???

I don't knoooow ;___; I figure it's even. You can all come and mangle...woolloomooloo* or something

*I do not live here, I just like the name hahaha

Good guess, since that's exactly how it's pronounced (L.A. resident here).

It's not like we Americans don't do the same to other countries, though.

It's not just Brits and Irish who pronounce it like that, it's actually a fairly common variant of the pronunciation where I'm from? Off the top of my head I know there's a Tom Petty song that pronounces it like that.

Considering the name's in fucking Spanish, I find it utterly hilarious to see people bitching about the correct English pronunciation.

Why? Loan words have their own pronunciation in the language that's taken them. Do you laugh when people pronounce "chaise lounge" as "chayz lownge?" Would you laugh at a Japanese person for writing and pronouncing "ice cream" as "aisukurimu?"

No. I'd laugh at them if they threw a little hissy fit about their pronunciation being the only correct one.
