Job reference question

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
So I have a job right now but would like to apply elsewhere. Probably will end up applying to a lot of jobs and i know my boss will be my reference but i don't want him to be spammed by reference checks from the amount I apply for (or keep asking him for permission for jobs as they come up)

What should I do?

I'll admit I'm pretty nervous about applying for jobs again. I've never got one through official applications before (never made it past the interview stages)

Does your boss know you're looking? He should, if you plan on listing him as a reference. You might ask if there's a limit on how many he's willing to do, and then tailor your applications accordingly. And if he doesn't give you a limit, the amount of "spam" he gets isn't you problem, so don't worry about it.

Keep in mind though, that if he's your current boss, it's possible he could be contacted whether he's your reference or not.

I will certainly make sure he's okay with it first! I wanted some advice before I go up and ask him about it.

At least, I hope he doesn't mind. Considering I would be leaving the position. /fret

Reference checks take about two minutes and they're part of his position as The Boss. You don't have to keep asking him permission for each job; if you're planning on leaving on good terms (or if this is a second job you're looking for), just tell him that you're applying for multiple jobs.

Multiple jobs is a good line to use. I do plan on leaving on good terms. I've enjoyed my time here. I've been here quite awhile so I can't really hunt down references from previous jobs many many maaaany years ago.

I'd advise you still keep the old jobs on your resume, though. Most places will want to verify, even if it's been forever. You might like to ask him for a reference letter as well and see if any of your other coworkers are willing to be references.

That's an idea. Most places only ask for 2 references at least, although they do want me to list all my jobs (fair enough). I've also got volunteering going on right now.

You could put "References available upon request" on your resume. That might be a turn off forr some people because they don't want to take that extra step. I don't know what it's like in your field or how competative it is, but I always hear about employers cutting back on the number of resumes they have to sort through by tossing anything that doesn't meet a particular standard.

For what it's worth, I do some hiring for my employer and I only ever contact references if I'm serious about hiring a person, so your boss may not get spammed by every place you apply.

I work in HR, and unless the rest of a resume is absolutely amaze-balls, "reference available on request" resumes go directly to the trash. If you* want the job, give me your info. Because, you're right, I've got a shit-ton of resumes, and -- amaze-balls notwithstanding -- I'm not going to go out of my way on yours.

*General you, not you specifically.

OP

I'll keep this in mind, thanks! I really hope my current boss doesn't mind. He's actually new to the position as of a few months, would you consider it acceptable for me to have my team leader as a second reference? Or should I check up on my boss from my previous job (casual checkout of 3 years while studying) and make sure the contact details are correct?

Thanks for your advice.

In a perfect world, I'd like to have references that were more branched out that "immediate boss" and "overall boss" but I think if you have a third person who is not related to this one job, it could balance out.

Frankly, unless a place is interested in hiring you, they probably won't bother calling your references. Even if they are, most of the places I've worked at will wait until after the interview to be *sure* they're interested before doing it - so leave him on there. With how things are right now, chances are he won't be spammed.
