There's an interesting conversation about this general topic going on right now in sports, actually, centered around a rookie named Royce White who has (I believe) an anxiety disorder and was for a good long while embroiled with a contract dispute with the Houston Rockets who drafted him about precisely how his disorder should be regarded. What's interesting is that his contention is that the majority of people have some kind of mental unhealthiness going on, and that society basically refuses to acknowledge this, and that the right and proper thing to do would be to take account of it and try to build a society that's workable for these people. It's an interesting topic - and I think it generally is a good idea to talk about, on a societal level, how these things are influenced and how we tend to address, or not address, them. And I think, to go to your point, that it's not just an individual person helping or not helping themselves, there's also things that we as a society can and should and need to address, and part of that is adjusting our view of mental illness. And regarding it as more real. And maybe getting rid of this weird Protestant thing where getting sick is Bad and everything is one's own fault and all that sort of a thing.
