Arguments like this piss me off. Because yes, people should never use a diagnosis as an excuse to do nothing, instead should focus on using it as like a stepping stone to figuring out how to get better. But then I think a lot of people look at an explanation and automatically think excuse. I have anxiety and depression, among other issues, and part of taking care of myself is knowing my limits within those boundaries. So yeah, there are things that I know I can't do because of those disorders, no matter how reasonable those things may seem to outsiders. Things that I am mentally unable to handle. And sometimes I vent about it on my journal or wherever. And it pisses me off when people come in and try to tell me I'm using my disability as an excuse to be lazy, because fuck you. But I know there are people out there who do that, it's just that I take the whole thing way too personally.

Uh, how did anyone tell you you're using your disability as an excuse to be lazy? The op is talking about *some* people. And I can state for a fact they're correct about "some" people. You even say yourself you know there are people out there that do it.

DA - Technically correct or not, it's still a douchebag thing to say. Saying "some people" tends to be just a polite way of saying, "I'm judging people based on arbitrary criteria," and "some" of the people they're judging "some" of the time are going to be people with actual, legitimate issues who end up feeling really fucking shitty because yet another person is trying to tell them they're making shit up.

Making blanket statements like that, even when you technically qualify them, is still bad, and the OP should feel bad. If they want to bitch about a specific person, fine, but they can do it without slapping other people in the face.

Oh come on. So anything more then an individual must cast aspersions on all? That criteria seems far too strict. Especially when you acknowledge it yourself.

Apparently you missed the memo where they're no a great evil.

You evidently missed the memo where it was explained that generalizations are how human beings make sense of the world. If no one generalized, everything around us would be an unintelligible mass of discrete facts with no relation to one another. Some people, though, seize on epigrams like Voltaire's All generalizations are false, including this one and think GENERALIZATIONS ARE TOTES AWFUL. Then they go around thwapping people for making them. Most of them grow out of it.
