Pronunciation Variations

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
How do the people where you live pronounce "gyro"? I never seem to say it right in the different restaurants and cities that I've tried to order it. I almost hate to order such spit-roasted deliciousness at new-to-me places now, because I invariably have the server or cashier look at me like I'm stupid.

Also, I've been thinking: If a person is named Basil, I assume that first syllable is pronounced with a BAH sound; if someone's referring to the herb, it's a BAY sound. How universal is that?

JAI-roh, jai like the first syllable in gyrate, roh like roast, the stress is like the name Michael

I'd say BAY-zel unless I'm corrected

I believe gyro is pronounced "YEAR-oh."

I call it "year-o" But then I asked a Greek friend of mine and that how she pronounced it. So, I followed suit.

I do the same thing with Basil. If it's the plant, I say "bay-sil." But if it's a person, it's "bah-sil."

I am confused by Basil phonetics. Is "Bah-zul" like the "a" in cat or the "o" in bottle?

Ghee (hard G) - rho, or so I thought. First time I ever ordered it was IN Greece, but looking at replies maybe I was hearing wrong and it's really yee-ro. Here in North America I always hear gy (as in gyrate) - ro, though.

Bay-sil.

"Gyro" as in the sandwich is like "year-oh" (though I end up pronouncing it like "euro" anyway :/)

"Basil" as a name is, I think, a more British name, and tends to be pronounced "Bah-zil," while the herb (at least in the US) is pronounced "bay-zil."

I have no idea what a gyro is, beyond guessing it's some type of food. Never heard anyone around here say it.

I pronounce both the name and the herb with a BAH sound.

It's a Greek-influenced sandwich similar to shawarma, made of thin slices of spiced, spit-roasted meat rolled in a pita, with diced tomatoes and onions, feta cheese, and a sauce (tzatziki) made of yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic and dill.

I pronounce it JEAR-oh. But I think it's supposed to be YEAR-oh.

I would assume Basil would always be BAY-sil, but then I've never come across a person with that name in real life. Maybe books.

I had a schoolmate whose name was Parsley. Her sister was named Rosemary and her brother was named Basil. /cool story

It was a common question. She said yes.

I'd heard it's actually supposed to be pronounced more like "hero," but I always say "jai-ro" anyway.

Also, I agree with you on "Basil"/"basil."

Jai-roh.

Basil is usually pronounced Bay-zil for both the herb and name where I live.

I also say year-o, and that's what I've mainly heard around me, sometimes "hero." For basil I say bay for the herb and ba as in bat for the name, like Basil of Baker Street in the Great Mouse Detective (is that no one else's point of reference for that name?).

I'd always heard "gyro" pronounced as "yurro."

Yer-oh (like you'd say "Yer out!" to a baseball player) or year-oh. And they're mighty tasty.

I pronounce the name and the herb with a Bah.

It's "YEER-oh"--though people around here usually say "GUY-roh" or "JAI-roh." Well, they're wrong, that's all.

Everyone I know pronounces both the name and the herb "bay-zil"--I've yet to hear a Greek mention "St. Bazzle the Great."
