Pronunciation Variations
(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)Also, I've been thinking: If a person is named Basil, I assume that first syllable is pronounced with a BAH sound; if someone's referring to the herb, it's a BAY sound. How universal is that?
Re: Pronunciation Variations
(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:30 am (UTC)(link)I'd say BAY-zel unless I'm corrected

I do the same thing with Basil. If it's the plant, I say "bay-sil." But if it's a person, it's "bah-sil."

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:41 am (UTC)(link)Bay-sil.
Re: Pronunciation Variations
(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:45 am (UTC)(link)"Basil" as a name is, I think, a more British name, and tends to be pronounced "Bah-zil," while the herb (at least in the US) is pronounced "bay-zil."
Re: Pronunciation Variations
(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 02:07 am (UTC)(link)I pronounce both the name and the herb with a BAH sound.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 02:21 am (UTC)(link)I would assume Basil would always be BAY-sil, but then I've never come across a person with that name in real life. Maybe books.

Also, I agree with you on "Basil"/"basil."
Re: Pronunciation Variations
(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 03:05 am (UTC)(link)Basil is usually pronounced Bay-zil for both the herb and name where I live.

Re: Pronunciation Variations
(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)Everyone I know pronounces both the name and the herb "bay-zil"--I've yet to hear a Greek mention "St. Bazzle the Great."
