Does anyone else have a problem with being unable to stop reading things you know are just going to piss you off?

I got so bad at this person on tumblr who was saying that all BDSM is abusive, and anyone who does it is an abuser, that I was shaking and could barely type. AND I JUST KEPT GOING BACK TO THAT PAGE. I finally had to put the address in a site blocker so that I couldn't visit it anymore, and even now I'm tempted to take the address out of the site blocker to look back and see if they've replied to me one last time.

Anyone else unable to make good decisions for their bloodpressure?

I keep hanging out on the TTLG forums.

Some of the shit that goes down there, my god.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I still visit here, after all.

I have the same experience (shaking with rage) when I encounter an argument -- or even a friendly debate -- between pro-life and pro-choice. I feel that strongly about it. And yet I can never just look away...

Yes, arguments against gay rights. There are few things that make my blood boil faster.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
This. Normally I can respect and understand both sides of an issue, even if I don't agree, but there is no valid reason to be against gay rights.

"OMFG IT THREATENS TRADITIONAL VALUES!!1!" makes no fucking sense. Are gays trying to take rights away from straights? No. All they want is to have the SAME rights. And if you really think they're going to invade your schools and teach kids about sodomy, then go buy some tinfoil and make yourself a fucking hat.

"Gay parents = gay kids!" Okay, so where do you think all the gay people came from before gay couples raising kids became a thing? If you guessed "straight parents", congratulations, please step on up and claim your prize. Now, I know that saying "if straight parents don't necessarily raise straight kids, then gay parents don't necessarily raise gay kids" is the fallacy of the converse, and therefore isn't logically sound, but use your brain, people.

"Children need influence from both sexes growing up!" I have some single parents here who would like to have a word with you.

"But procreation!" I have some elderly, infertile, and non-child-wanting people here who would like to have a word with you. I've also brought in a number of overpopulation scientists, just for good measure.

"Stick to the status quo~!" Okay, I'll admit, it's a catchy song. But you know what else was status quo? Slavery. Women being property. If you're racist and sexist, try this one: no electricity!

"But the Bible says--" No, stop right there. Do you always obey the Bible to the letter? Probably not, seeing as it says countless other things that have long since become outdated. Do you play football? Wear polyester? Eat shellfish? Congratulations, you're permanently marked as a heathen and have nothing to lose by supporting gay rights.

If there's one I haven't covered, give it to me. I'll explain why it's fucking stupid.

100% agreed, and you make some excellent points. I can't think of other reasons people give for being against it either; it usually comes down to one of these. (And you've done a good job of explaining why all of these arguments are idiotic, so kudos. I feel like I need to keep this somewhere so I can use it in the future.)

This was me with the niceguysofokc tumblr. Thankfully it's shut down now, but the people featured there did nothing but infuriate me every time I saw them. I got literally no enjoyment out of visiting the site, but I couldn't stop going there. :(

Ugh. Yes. And I don't understand why I do it. example when I see an image on Facebook about gay rights or whatever - it's a positive image / news update / proclamation, but I ALWAYS open the comments to see what the anti people are whining. I spend way too long doing it and its like I can't stop myself. I don't understand what's wrong with me.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Not quite the same thing, but I get addicted to things like that. There's this mix of amused superiority, confusion, and pure seething rage that keeps me coming back to places like the MGTOW forums, just to stare at the stupid people saying stupid things.

Every day I literally have to force myself to close Yahoo news at work, because it is not a healthy use of my free time to read people's comments over and get upset over them.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I thought I was the only person who did that!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hell yes! Sometimes I'll read a secret here and know something in the comments is going to piss me off, but I cannot stop myself from reading them.

I do this with f!S sometimes (...today...) and whenever I end up reading an article about sexism in gaming (don't look at the comments don't look at the comments don't look at t- WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS IDIOT THINKING?!)
