Oh yeah, going around calling people scary would not end well indeed. I'm imagining some poor Lolita cosplayer being shelled shocked. If he really wants to "be involved" so to speak, you could retrain him with すごい and ステキ. I think those are a bit harder to screw up.

And I don't think rustiness should be a problem. I ended up taking a four year break between two levels of Japanese classes and was surprised at how quickly I fell back into the flow of things. And it should also help that you really only need the basics to get around, none of the fancier stuff.
