I am genderqueer not FTM but
I know that for me it's not that I want to look like a certain gender or androgynous because that's what men or women (or neither) are supposed to look like, it's because it's the only way I can think well of myself.
The first time I had my hair short was the first time I ever liked how I looked, and I like how I look even more with a binder. It was upsetting growing up because I didn't know why I didn't like how I looked. I knew something was off, but I couldn't tell what.
And believe me if I could be happy looking feminine then I would change in an instant, but that's jsut not how it works.

I think I understand this perspective already. I dated a girl who was very butch and hated the way she'd been forced to dress as a kid. And I understand that there is an entire spectrum of identities and how people like to present. I think I am generally distrustful of medicine though, and the idea of surgery and taking chemicals that change your body makes me uncomfortable. The anon below you linked me to a good perspective on it though, I'm trying to think it through...

DA - it sounds like your hangup is your perspective on the treatment of GID. Sex-reassignment surgeries and hormone therapies aren't like recreational drugs and tattoos. They're not cosmetic, they're therapeutic. They are tested and studied methods that have been found to increase the quality of life for transgender folks overall. It's no different than the baby born with a cleft face who had facial reconstruction surgery, or the old lady with Parkinson's taking medication to slow the progression.

There are some trans folks who elect to not go through surgery or hormones, and if that works for them, that's wonderful, but for a lot of us, that's not enough. Sometimes a lifestyle change is enough to pull some people out of depression, too, but for others, it requires therapy and medication. We are all different and we all respond differently to things, so it's unfair to disparage some forms of treatment when that's somebody's best option for a better life.
