tw: self-harm, suicide

My friend and I had a huge fight because she mentioned she'd been thinking about ways to kill herself and I mentioned that, if she ever threatened to do it in all seriousness, I would call the police. (She lives in a different city than I do.) She couldn't accept that, and I couldn't accept that she wanted me to not do everything in my power to keep her alive.

Now we're talking again, but I'm terrified out of my little mind, because this is exactly how she ended up self-harming: she said she was thinking about it, but she'd never ever do it! and then two weeks later she was clawing her arms open. She refuses to attempt to get help (in a myriad of evasive ways) and takes any suggestion that she should do so as a personal attack, even more so after our argument. Eventually, she is going to try to kill herself, and I will be in contact with her at that point in time, and I don't know what I'm going to do.

You're going to call the police, because that's what you said you'd do. The silver lining, as horrible as the situation is, is that if it does happen, she might actually get the help she needs. Your friendship might suffer for a while for it, but IMO that's worth protecting somebody you care about.

Every time she threatens to kill herself, you call the police. Through this she will both face consequences for what she's doing/saying, and will be pushed towards getting help. Both of these may suck for her, but they need to happen. Even if it sacrifices the friendship, it's on the altar of your friend being safe.

The position you're in now is not conducive to a good friendship, it'll explode or disintegrate as some point or another. Appeasing her here and there is just keeping things as they are.

I'm sorry that this has happened to you. :\ It's sad.
