I'm trying to comprehend this.

Wasn't Merlin supposed to be some sort of prequel to the Arthurian legends? And if so, why on earth would it end with Arthur dying? That makes no sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
don't bother trying, it actually doesn't make sense.

Sorry about that, I deleted the comment because of the spoilers. I thought most people in the comm had either seen it already or didn't care about spoilers (I asked about it a while back) so I didn't think anything of leaving them.

Again, sorry that I spoiled you. :(

As for you question...I have no idea.

***SPOILERS***

From what I can tell it's less of a prequel and more of a retelling. It ends with Arthur and Mordred killing each other which is true to Arthurian legend only here Mordred isn't Arthur's son.

I don't watch Merlin but would it kill you to spoiler mark something for a show that hasn't even aired in the US?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the secret itself doesn't really spoil anything. It's the first comment that's the problem.

Sorry to everyone, I thought no one cared about the spoilers anymore. (I deleted the comment. Again, sorry!)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, because of course when we're discussing US shows that aren't done being aired abroad we certainly spoilermark, amirite?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
GAH final ep made me so mad. even looking at this secret makes me mad. not your fault tho.

SPOILERS IN COMMENT

I thought Mordred smiled because he was just relieved it was over. The love of his life had been killed and he had turned on Arthur, who he had previously loved as a friend. That is some srs emotional stress. I don't get the impression Mordred was a violent person; he didn't enjoy causing others pain. So I interpreted it as like, his heart basically closed when the girl he loved was killed, and he only wanted to live as long as it took to avenge her.

This makes a lot of sense and seems more realistic given his behavior.

Am I the only person in this fandom who thought the episode wasn't good?
I'm not trying to start wank or anything; it's just that the (few) reactions I've seen were all extremely positive and I'm starting to feel like I'm completely alone with my opinion. Hence the question.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
No, you aren't the only one. I have seen more negative than positive reactions about this episode in fandom. There was very much critic.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
not alone. it pretty much ruined my christmas!

hmm i guess different corners of fandom? as someone who felt the last 2-3 seasons of this show went to hell, i enjoyed the finale a lot (or much more than i expected to, at any rate, although i'll easily admit it was far from flawless) but most people i know/spoke to really didn't.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't hate or enjoy the last two season's but this ending was a mess. I usually don't get angry over things like this but that ending... It was too rushed and it made me cringe.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I had mixed feelings on seasons 4 and 5 but I did think things were starting to improve in season 5 prior to the finale. Which was just a hot mess, really.

And no, I don't think that because of the deaths. I only cared about one of those and that was one I knew was coming given the writers treatment of that character all along.

The finale was rushed, a lot of the dialogue was awful and there were bits in there that had no real purpose.

But I can't say I hated it in it's entirety because my favorite character got a phenomenal ending, though I imagine that was unintentional on the writers' part, as they gave no shits about that character in the last two seasons.

what character?!?

I thought it did what it had to do. You can't do that story without ending it with the hand coming out of the lake to accept the sword, and the events that lead up to it. Well of course they could have totally abandoned canon, but I think it needed to end that way. I thought it was better than a lot of the episodes, it was fine.

Though my feelings were mixed (both loved and hated different aspects) I agree it was beautifully shot.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually liked the finale better than the rest of s5. The third to last episode was probably my favourite episode of series five. There were still problems and certain things could have been handled better, things that were annoying, but overall I thought they wrapped the series up far better than their development, particularly in the last season, anticipated. I could have done without the final scene though.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean the scene set in the modern world? If so I agree, it didn't work. Everything else was pretty good and it played out the way it should have done really.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that one. Ending on the one before that with Gwen I think would have been stronger.
