ida with slutshaming being used for men. sorry, but it's true.
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

Why? Some people do think badly of men who sleep around as if that's a horrible thing, but don't if it's a woman

Why is it okay for one gender but not the other, isn't that kind of hypocritical if you're the kind of person who supports a woman's right to express her sexuality (and I do)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
because the term was created to explain how women are treated differently than men who sleep around. while some have recently started to call men sluts, it has a long history of being a feminine insult and is still mostly seen as one today.

men who sleep around are simply men. the number of their sexual partners affirms their masculinity and is often seen with awe. women who sleep around are shamed and seen as less valuable.

BECAUSE THE TERM IS A DESCRIPTOR OF A WAY WOMEN ARE OPPRESSED AND MALTREATED AS A GROUP IN SOCIETY, WHY IS THIS HARD JESUS

I don't see gender OK

I'm sorry you haven't reached my stage of enlightenment

Clearly I gotta try harder, hang with the hippies and chant some mantras. Someday, qorl. Someday.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
In real life? Maybe. But in fanfic-land, where people don't treat gender the way they do IRL, it's pretty damn legit.

Especially in slash, where heteronormative roles are often pretty blatantly laid out and usually cast the "slutty" character in the "woman's" role.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
you kind of lost me there, at least in relation to this secret, because kirk and tony are probably two of the most alpha-male types ever imagined.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but in fanfic-land, that pretty much always translates to "slutty". The promiscuous flirtatious characters, even if they're portrayed as alpha males in canon, are ukefied and put in a stereotypical woman's role in fanfic. Have you read much slash fanfic in your lifetime?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
yes...but i think i'm reading different stuff than you are. cause most often the 'slutty cheater' is in the seme role.

WHAT? Context doesn't exist, silly. One term can be used across the board for everything, regardless of any of the history involved.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Context exists, it just doesn't matter. Not when we're talking about abhorent attitudes.

If somthing is wrong, its wrong. Pretending like its ok, or less wrong when it's not happening to you or people like you, (and the endless excuses people come up with to justify why it's different when it's happening to 'Them' instead of 'Us') shows a lack of empathy and compassion. The exact type of lack of empathy that has lead to the current situation.

Of course You'll have somthing to respond with to justify why it's ok, or why my point is invalid, and why it's ok to keep on with this particular double standard (has there ever been a double standard through out history that didn't have countless arguments that seem valid to to people benefitting from it?), but please do try to give it some thought from the other side of things before you post.

Seems the whole world would have been a less shitty place if we as a species could get over the 'Them and us' metalitiy.

yeah it's just as bad as calling a white person "cracker." TOTALLY ABHORRENT. When will the hate stop?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

it's not really about hate, though. it's the fact that someone is being diminished as a person, that their own feelings and experiences are being diminished. it's never, ever okay to do that to somebody, and it's not 'worse' to do it to one 'kind' of person over another, just because it's been done more to that 'kind' of people. that mentality is pretty much the root of the problem, even of the intent is different.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's more like verbally bullying a white person because you're an asshole, versus verbally bullying a black person and calling him the n-word because he's black and you're a racist asshole.

The latter is obviously worse and has more layers of awfulness woven into it, but that doesn't mean bullying the white person is okay.
