I actually don't read D/R fic so I haven't experienced her fics for myself, but I'm cackling because a friend of mine haaaaates her fics too.

So YANA, nonny!

I'm surprised this didn't get put in the failbar as a personal attack, but with that said, IA.

Of course, as someone who doesn't like even the mildest AU for the purpose of ~OTP~ and isn't too keen on the Doctor having sex with his companions at all*, I might not be the best to judge.

*With several circumstances as exceptions.
tenlittlebullets: (talk nerdy to me)

[personal profile] tenlittlebullets 2013-02-10 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
What are the exceptions? Oftentimes they're more interesting than the rule.

(I'm also not a huge fan of the Doctor banging human companions. Unless the issues are actually thoroughly dealt with, which I doubt canon will ever do.)

ETA: Also not a huge fan of authors making incredibly lazy modifications to canon just to save themselves the trouble involved in getting an OTP together. Especially when the distance wasn't that great to begin with. I don't read Doctor/Rose fic and don't even know what author's being referred to, but Doctor/Master shippers are often just as guilty; you don't have to make that much of a leap from the way they interact in canon, let alone twist them into caricatures of themselves just to get the hot Tennant/Simm sexing.

AYRT

The main things for me with any fic (and shippy tends to be worse than gen, IME) is that the story should be either entirely canon compliant or have a very specifically defined conception of what makes it AU (and that AU can be massive, so long as it's dealt with properly). If it is AU, the implications caused by the changes should be at least reasonably if not fully explored, rather than just throwing them in there because it's convenient. There are a lot of wonderful things about playing in a pre-existing universe, but there are some drawbacks to it. With Doctor Who, the worst I've come across is the abundance of Ten/Jack/Rose OT3 fics which never explain why the hell those characters, who were only together once in canon and there were a million other people there, wound up together,

Specifically with Doctor/Companion for me:
-The Doctor has to be in character. No turning him into a domestic, lovey dovey boyfriend who is good at getting his feelings out. He's still the Doctor.
-The author, if not the characters, needs to be aware of how screwed up it is to have a centuries old alien in a relationship with a woman in her early twenties. If it's meant to be a healthy relationship, the characters need to have several in depth conversations about it. It's a potentially interesting dynamic, if fanfiction actually ever dealt with it properly.
-It can't be one of the companions who totally hero worships the Doctor. That's just creepy.
-The sex has to be embedded within a story. If it's just standalone PWP, it's probably OOC and I'm probably bored.
-As with my point about every fic, if the fact that a relationship did not occur to fulfilment is a major part of the character arc (such as with Ten/Rose), I don't want to read about said relationship occurring to fulfilment without a damn good reason for it (and I've never, as of yet, found one). In practicality, this means that I'm a much happier Classic Who shipper than I am with New Who.

RE: Doctor/Master. I love Doctor/Master, certainly more than Doctor/Companion. I think that canon has made it perfectly plausible, and I love the character dynamics it causes. But, yeah, there's a lot of bad!fic on the part of authors who want to write Doctor/Master and yet somehow don't want to write anything dark. IDK why those people were even drawn to that ship to begin with. There's plenty of really, really good fic too, so I'm generally happy with that ship.
tenlittlebullets: (master gives two thumbs up)

[personal profile] tenlittlebullets 2013-02-11 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, agreed with almost all of this. (Re PWP, I am actually more likely to cut an author some slack for the sake of porn.) And agreed so hard with the Doctor not being a lovey-dovey domestic boyfriend--even when he's doing domestic in canon, he hems and haws and grumbles and makes sarcastic remarks about it to the point where you'd never believe he'd agree to it if he weren't physically there at the dinner table.

And yes, my major exception to "no Doctor/companion" is "unless it's deliberately written to be fucked-up OR the characters actually deal with all the issues involved."

My problem with finding Doctor/Master fic is that when the author doesn't make them incongruously fluffy bunnies (or poor widdle blameless angstbunnies who still call each other by their schoolboy nicknames and weep over their lost idylls in the red grass...?!), there's still a lot of fic that boils down to "evil wins because good is dumb, and the Master spends the next 60,000 words torturing the Doctor in increasingly depraved ways." I'm not averse to seeing the Doctor lose a few rounds for once, but we're talking the difference between losing a boxing match after putting up a fair fight vs. getting held down and repeatedly punched by half a dozen goons with brass knuckles. It's just numbing after a while, not to mention flatly OOC for the Doctor to lie there and take it and not be plotting a way out.

[personal profile] wake_the_dragon 2013-02-11 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
That definitely sounds aggravating. But are there any good Doctor/Master fics you'd reccomend?
tenlittlebullets: (master gives two thumbs up)

[personal profile] tenlittlebullets 2013-02-11 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh. Not sure what you'd have read already, and am running short on time so I'll just give names and archives instead of links, but--Eclipsing Binary ([livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2). Chasing the Paradox ([livejournal.com profile] nemaline). New Dawn Fades (AO3). Need (by Lamiel on Teaspoon). [livejournal.com profile] dwseason4, [livejournal.com profile] dwseason5, The Naming of Things (all by [personal profile] aria). I'm probably forgetting a lot of fics, but those are the ones that spring immediately to mind. (Oh, and paradoxically, all the fic that came out of the Sick-a-thon aka The Kink That Must Not Be Named is amazing.)

Edit: Oh also everything by x_los (on... I think pretty much all the archives?) A lot of it falls under "crack!fluff," but really, the only way you can pull off a Doctor/Master "running a tea shop" AU is if both of them are 100% recognizably themselves, so.

"-The sex has to be embedded within a story. If it's just standalone PWP, it's probably OOC and I'm probably bored."

Meh. If it's PWP, I'm probably just reading it to get off, and I don't really mind if it's OOC as long as it's the kind of porn I was looking for, with the characters I'm interested in. It's different when it comes to non-PWP stories that contain sex.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
not personal attack because the author isn't named?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
You can debate whether or not personal attacks are okay, but if it's blatantly obvious to those who would know who the person is, it doesn't matter if the name is given or not.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not a personal attack because it's just about her fanfic writing/popularity. It'd be a personal attack if it was saying she's a horrible person and should die, for example, the big distinction being is it about what they do/their fandom status or is it about them as a person.

I've never read her as far as I can recall, but in my experience a good-sized chunk of Doctor/Rose fic and the Doctor/Rose fandom in general is disappointingly crappy, bland, unimaginative, cookie-cutter, devoid of interesting characterization or analysis, divorced from the source material, and in general completely lifeless and uninspired. So it makes perfect sense that a dull, flat, OOC writer would be really popular in that fandom.

Yes, this is a veiled request for recs that have actually interesting takes on the dynamic.

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-02-10 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
lol. I wish I had recs for you, but yeah... I ship D/R so much, but I haven't found much good fic.

My favorite DW fics are mostly humorous in nature because at least they are fun.
thinkatory: ([DW] I create myself.)

[personal profile] thinkatory 2013-02-10 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I should whip up a recslist at some point, and you've just reminded me.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Please please please do this, I love both Doctor/Rose and good writing. Linky-link when you do?
thinkatory: ([DW] I can see that.)

Promise! :D

OP, I believe that if you'll re-read your secret, you'll see that you've answered your own question. :p

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow it's 2008 all over again!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
You're pretty much spot on, OP. I read it for the sex. And that's all I'm looking for out of it.

Her name is actually on the secret though.

(That being said I've never read her stuff, despite being a D/R fan.)

[personal profile] apurplepatch 2013-02-11 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Since the majority of her fic is Rose/Nine its more an excuse to have Ecclestone and Piper bone but don't bog yourself down with details.

An exceptional number of people act like this particular author is their personal pinata - at least one squabble made it onto JournalFen, secrets posted to FandomSecrets, harassment campaigns on some boards I've seen - is there a squad of people out there holding you down and forcing you to read it?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I'm not much of a fan of her output, although her initial D/R stories were better written. I don't read her now. And yet this seems to me to veer perilously close to personal attack territory. Yes it's not her RL name, but her online name identifies her pretty well.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, this makes me sad. She's actually written some really good fics.
