What would he gain by doing it? If it was a huge joke on us, isn't 30 years way too long to wait to deliver the punchline? I don't care one way or the other about him but it's hard to believe he'd stay "dead" for 30 years and not want to laugh about it eventually.

Well, we are talking about the guy whose one act consisted of him crawling into a tent for a nap and not coming out until all of the audience would get pissed off and left. I doubt he ever did anything to gain something, it was all just a matter of amusing himself.

People got tired of him, you know, and he never wanted to be known as a 'has-been', so my guess is he just wanted to start over as somebody else, instead of forever being known as Andy Kaufman: a has-been. If he didn't fake it, then he really wanted people to think that he did, so I guess, either way, he got what he wanted.

BTW, I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist (I don't think Elvis faked it, for example). but something about Andy's death (or "death") has always been intriguing to me.

Well, you make a good point, but this is Andy Kaufman we're talking about here. If there's anyone I could believe would do this for a laugh and stay dead for 30 years and never come out in public to reveal it, and just laugh about it privately, it would be Andy Kaufman.

It's also possible that Kaufman faked his death in '84 but died for real at some point after that. But that possibility makes me sad.

I've never particularly thought about him faking his death before, but to be fair, if there was one guy who was going to do this and never fess up to it, it would probably be Andy Kaufman. I don't think he ever actually admitted to being Tony Clifton, for example.
