You aren't alone, OP. I have had this very conversation. I tend to fall for an actress through seeing her in a role. I will then go and watch vast amounts of her back catalogue, but most of my fannish energy and all my shipping will be focused on her characters.

Crushing on the actress herself makes me uncomfortable, too. And meeting her in real life or following celebrity news about her is as much a pain as a pleasure.

Mileage varies on this, I guess.
