(I'm Austrian.) I think German dubs can be quite good, but I always prefer the original. It's not just anime. I also watch movies, cartoons, and TV shows in their original language. And I buy books in the original language if I know it.

As for the few English dubs I've heard... well, I'm not very impressed. The newest is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009). Some of the voice actors are great (the woman dubbing Alphonse, for example, is amazing.) But others just sounded rather awkward. I know Vic Mignogna has many fans, so please don't hate me, but I really dislike Ed's voice. I guess it's mostly because I prefer deep female voices to high-pitched male voices.

The German Detective Conan dub is my favourite. The voices are amazing, and the actors make an effort to pronounce all the names correctly. I think it was one of the first anime to do that.

Ed's voice in FMA and FMA:B is the sole reason I could not stand to watch the dubs.

Pretty much. Some of the voices I had to get used to (compared to the original, Roy sounds almost comically deep. Though I guess it was similar enough during the first anime. And the voice actor is pretty decent.) Some voices I wasn't too fond of, but I could live with that. Ed, though? No. Just no.

Maxey Whitehead ended up making Al sound like a 40 year old woman at times, so I disagree with you a lot.

The only time I don't hate Vic is for FMA... and Ikkaku in Bleach, but in Bleach, you can barely tell it's him until he shouts.

french anon, snd same for me. I just find the english dubs terrible.

I'm Swedish, and it's the same for me. Very little anime gets a Swedish dub (the only works I can think of are the Studio Ghibli movies that have been shown in theaters), so I get to choose between reading subtitles or hearing Japanese characters talk like Americans. Since I'm used to reading subtitles anyway (we don't really dub anything here, except ads and children's stuff), it's a pretty simple choice.

I don't see why it should bother me if someone else prefers dubs, though. Hey, to each their own.
