IDK how people can think that this is a superior design; the blue girl, for instance, looks like a half of her skull was snatched away by some unknown force.

Well...the original design was not exactly realistic. I watched PPG as a kid, but I kind of like these designs better. I thought the original girls looked creepy. They didn't even look like they belonged in the world they were in. Their eyes were far too large and abstract, and just looked empty and soulless.

Anyway, I don't remember the relationship being creepy. How was it creepy?

They didn't even look like they belonged in the world they were in.

That was the point.

I disagree. They're supposed to be normal looking little girls with super powers. It's clear to me that the girl's were designed first, the rest of the animation followed and did not match, but no alteration was made.

They are not supposed to look alien. Belle from Beauty and the Beast has a slightly different animation style to make it clear she's beautiful and not just a regular peasant, but she still fits the look of the world.

Wrong. Characters in the show often mentioned that the girls looked different. There's even a newspaper in one of the episodes (possibly the movie?) with the headline, "Bugged-Eyed Weirdo Girls Break Everything."

WROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG. (See? It's kind of annoying.)

Yeah, that's a gag. They're often mistaken for normal little girls in the story, which wouldn't happen if they were freaky mutants.

It's not like I can remember the details, but their mutual misunderstandings bugged me a lot. Perhaps I was just unable to get the emotions, since I was little and had real problems understanding the emotions of real-life folks, not to mention the fictional ones.

But I think there was an instance of him falling in love with some creepy woman and dismissing them? And also an episode where he... sort of turned evil?
