I prefer subs to dubs, definitely. Part of it is probably because I was introduced to anime by a subbed version of Fushugi no Umi no Nadia (which was wonderfully done - I was appalled when I came across the first dub a few years later) and by watching the dub of Sailor Moon in English, a dub kinda notorious for being... Eh. Lacking.

Another part though is that I read very quickly and so I have no problems following the dialogue along with the action. I can do other things while watching subbed anime as well without any issues.

But the biggest issue at all, for me, is that certain dialogue sounds clunky in English (imo) because I find it culturally jarring but it works in Japanese. Like the whole "onee-san" deal, for instance. I've got no problems with the term and usage of "onee-san" or "onii-san" in Japanese but the moment it switches over to the English equivalent of "big sister" or "big brother", it has a different cultural association for me and not one I like. It's neutral in Japanese, it's nails on a chalkboard in English. "Big bro" or "big sis" just comes across as overly cutesy and cloying to me. I know that's not the case for everyone, of course, but that's how it is for me personally.

I think it's stupid that there are still flame wars over which is better though. So you like dubs best. Okay, great. That's fine. I've got no problems with that so long as you have no problems with my preference for subs. And, for that matter, so long as subs are just as easy to find as dubs. Netflix has a bunch of dubbed anime titles available but I can't think of any that are subbed. It's even more annoying with video games, where you've got a snowball's chance of finding anything that's subbed and even greater odds of having annoying voice actors than with anime.

The thing I hate most about a lot of the commercially available subs: Especially in asian movies, they have this nasty, nasty habit of including dubtitles instead of proper subs and then they are so fucking lazy when editing them that, while not a single word is spoken in the original versions, the dubtitles keep flying in. It makes me so angry when that happens, especially if it was an expensive DVD.

I totally agree with this, especially that third paragraph. I wish dubs would drop the whole "big bro/big sis" thing and just use the character's name instead. Onee/Onii-san has no good English equivalent, stop trying to force it!

Don't even get me started on Persona 4.

Agreed on all of this.

Ok late comment but

a) VALKYRIA CHRONICLES LOVE (and most JP video games are starting to be imported that way, for one thing, it probably saves money because nobody has to pay English-language VAs)

b) username + icon love OMGGGG
