Well, those hyenas clearly are shown to be going to heaven. Perhaps they think humans don't die permanently?

I also it assume it has something to do with the fact they were all drawn to do these crazy things to each other, regardless of whether the person survives. They have no empathy because they were drawn to have no empathy. It's just they're also drawn to survive all their pranks.

A nitpicky point but they were weasels, not hyenas.

I find it hard to believe that toons don't know how humans work and don't understand that humans can die from the things that toons would survive. They are shown interacting with humans all the time, it's not like Eddie was some mystical creature to them, the likes of which they've never seen before.

I can get on board with the lack of empathy part though.

It's not that I think they don't realize they can die, it's that it's either A) they assume humans go to heaven, since the weasels (I remember them laughing so much--that's usually a hyena thing!) do, or B) they're not drawn to care whether something dies, since they wouldn't need to care in a world where nothing dies.
