Instead of thinking you should whiteknight the person, why not just be friends with them online and do something more positive, because whiteknighting doesn't do much and really just makes the anonbashing even bigger and worse.
Honestly if I met a fan online who turned out to be that rude irl if I couldn't unfollow them, I would at least stop talking to them.

Considering how terrible I am at socializing, I would not make any judgments about the unsociable fan. Fun to be around in person -- no. But I know how that goes.
