Instead of thinking you should whiteknight the person, why not just be friends with them online and do something more positive, because whiteknighting doesn't do much and really just makes the anonbashing even bigger and worse.

Is there a legitimate reason for the fandom hate for the nice person or is it just "being a bitch"?

If she's like, a bigot or scammer or something then I wouldn't feel too bad. Awful people can be nice.

But if she's just the victim of fandom's need to tear someone (preferably popular) down and circle-jerk on hate memes then you not speaking up for her (not even in anon!) is a dick move, especially if she was nice enough to a) lend you money, and b) drive you home! You don't have to white knight her until you bring the whole fandom down on you, but at least a comment that she's really nice IRL wouldn't go amiss. :/

Why can't you unfollow the fan that blew you guys off? Are you guys friends? Do they post amazing porn? Is the fandom such an horrible place that they will kidnap your cat if you disagree with them?

I will have to agree with people up there and say you need to grow a spine. I mean, if the person is genuinely nice, I honestly don't see why they would bash her on an anonmeme. Or actually, I can. But maybe there's a lot of people who share your same opinion on this.

Fandom meet-ups can be so great and also terrible. I have to say, I've met a lot of fangirls IRL. 75% have been totally awesome. 15% have been incredible bitches who ditched or screwed someone ever. And 10% have just been intolerably strange.

Generally I think it's worth it, but as an example of strange... I had a friend once who I talked to online and via text all the time. She decided to come to my area for a meet-up and was super psyched. We wound up spending 3 entire days together, and during that whole time she spoke exactly 5 words to anyone. She had her phone out texting the whole weekend, but no matter how I talked to her, asked her questions, and tried to draw her out, she gave one-word answers and stayed on her phone. She was perfectly nice when she would talk or text me but... what the hell?

Looking at the reactions here, I feel some people don't get the culture of anon memes. Going into an anon meme to defend someone, especially when the dogpiling collective has already made up their mind that this person is bad doesn't do any good. In fact, it just makes shit worse. Every argument just gets shot down as white-knighting, half of the time they twist it into something along the lines of 'the only person who would defend this person is the person themselves, so look they are defending themselves, lets get them even harder'. If you wanna help someone, talk to them in person, offer them support. But keep your shit off anon-memes. At best you'll be useless, at worst, you'll just make it even harder on them.

If you're still following the person who behaved badly because you like what she's doing online, as opposed to following her because that's what the kool kids do, that's perfectly reasonable and not skeevy at all, OP.

But you should be standing up for the person who you turned out to like, unless there's a damned good reason not to. Like a Hitler was kind to dogs but he's still Hitler kind of reason. It's the right thing to do, and besides, what do you have to lose? If people judge you for behaving like a decent human being, you're probably better off knowing that about them right now so you can dump them. But probably they won't, and you'll wind up with a better class of online friends.

If nothing else, this seems pretty rude of you, OP. It doesn't seem like there was any obligation on this girl's part to be so nice to you. Even anonymously the least you could do is give her one nice, even if vague, comment.

OP, here's what I think I'd do:

1. Compose a message for the nice person. Don't mention your guilty feelings, stick to positive and neutral things. (I like to do this in Notepad or similar, because composing messages takes me ages and this way the risk the message gets eaten is smaller.)

(2. If you want to, unfollow the nasty person. This might make you feel a little bit bad, which is why this is not the last item on the list.)

3. Send the message you composed to the nice person's Ask box, email or similar - make it a private message.

4. Step away from the computer and do something that will take your mind off these things. If you think drama might happen as a result of your unfollowing, make sure not to be around for it. However, I think you'll find it wasn't so bad or so hard.

But OP, please do this, or at least something at all. You know you want to.

The good news is since this is ongoing, you can fix yourself. Not snubbing the other person is one thing, but be nice to people who deserve it and un-shit yourself.
