Someone else made the comment that anon meme culture (which I have never participated in) makes it difficult to just jump in and effectively defend someone who's being dogpiled on and I can understand that. I don't think it's your job to change the way the internet feels about this fan.

However, kindness should be repaid with kindness IMHO. I hope that you communicate with the fan who was nice to you and show her that you appreciated her company and her generosity in ways that don't involve you taking on a whole comm. In other words, now that you know she's cool, you can be her friend online too without being her sole champion in the anon meme.

This sounds about right.

Sending out champions is always a little sketchy in my book, just because it can turn regular drama so much worse.

But, y'know, someone who's just that plain nice to you based only on "well, we share a fandom"... Yeah, you probably should be nice back. They sound like a good friend. (And honestly, I've learned from experience that being friends with people like that can make you a better person in turn.)

Oh, good. I'm glad I didn't sound completely off the mark. I was a little hesitant to offer advice after reading that comment about anon meme culture because I really don't know anything about how those work at all.

This & what lunabee said.

^ this.

I have to say the culture I have seen on a lot of anon memes scares the fuck out of me, esp the ones that consider themselves social justice focused (because the extent that people will go to when they think they're doing it cause they're right is fucking terrifying). But the OP could at least talk to the fan that did them a good turn in private.
