I think militant atheists are a thousand times more obnoxious than ultra-religious Christians (and I've dealt with plenty of both).

At their most offensive, militant atheists tend to irk me more, probably because I'd be more likely to be lumped in with them than the other side, and hostile superiority toward religion pisses me off. Ultra-religious Christians offend me plenty, but at least in the us vs. them structure I know I can never be mistaken for one of them. If that makes sense.

DA

Idk, I've had run-ins with both... and it's weird, but it almost seems like they loop around and become the same person. If that makes any sense.

I think I know exactly what you mean. The most hardcore on both sides tend to use the same arguing style and the same sort of circular logic to defend their beliefs (or lack thereof).

SA

I've also noticed a ton of sexism and racism within both fundamentalist Christian and atheist circles... they just use different ways to justify it. Christians use the Bible, atheists use evo psych and "human nature".

The difference is that the Bible is inherently sexist and racist, whereas atheism is not. There is no atheism handbook telling us this and that. If you don't believe in a higher power? You're an atheist. So that includes all types of people; racists, sexists, feminists, gay people, straight people, people of all color and of all nationalities.

I'm an atheist and there's a certain kind of staunch atheist that annoys me very much, possibly because they tend to be so ignorant about the incredibly complex roles religion and religious communities fulfill in people's lives. Often they're people who were raised atheist and have never experienced the other side. They're just as good as some religious types at ignoring the realities of people's lives in favour of abstract ideology.

That said, I will always be more irascible about the ultra-religious because I was raised in the Catholic Church and am still trying to untangle all the damage it did to me. I'd say several bajillionty more people have been messed up by religious dogma than by atheists being arses.

I guess it depends where you're coming from.

I think otherwise.

Militant Christians are doing a thousand times more work to tell other people how to run their lives, though. See: abortion, gay marriage.

Re: Non-fandom Secrets

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
mte, it's not even comparable. I mean on a really basic 'annoying' level mainly but one is doing way, way more bad in the world so it comes off as really petulant to be really worked up about annoying but ultimately harmless jorts and fedora wearing super internet atheists.

Re: Non-fandom Secrets

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no... I'd rather get called a dumbass for a belief, than be told I'm sinful and gross for being attracted to my own gender. No competition.

Whoops, responded to the wrong person here.

Nah, they're equal.

Re: Non-fandom Secrets

Huh. I'm an atheist, though I don't go around announcing it to people. I've never run into a 'militant atheist' on the street, only on the internet. I have, however, run into a turn of ultra-religious people IRL. I'd rather be annoyed online than have a batshit crazy person shove poorly copied black and white handouts in my face and be told that I'm going to hell. LOL.

Re: Non-fandom Secrets

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
The worst you see from a militant atheist is severe arrogance--basically mocking people for their beliefs, and thinking themselves superior for not believing those things.

The worst you see from militant theists--restricting rights, changing laws, really truly hurting people.

I'm sorry, there is NO way they're even similar.

Re: Non-fandom Secrets

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
On an individual interactions, I think they're about the same. As far as world wide how it effects my life type of deal, ultra-religious Christians are a million times worse.

As long as you don't think all atheists are militant, then, I guess.

Damn those militant atheists, always enacting laws that force everyone else to adhere to their fucked-up beliefs--OHWAIT!!

I find it hard to compare them, because while atheists (and I say this as an atheist) can be really annoying and more-reasonable-than-thou, ultra-religious Christians can be dangerous in a way I've yet to see atheists be. At least not in absence-of-any-gods' name.

i think half the people commenting on this are forgetting that militant beliefs and ultra-whatever beliefs are completely different. being "ultra" atheist doesn't mean you force your atheism on others or are aggressively anti-theist, which is what militant atheism generally entails?? i mean between militant theists and militant atheists i'd still rather go with the theists, but i'd much rather go with ultra-religious people than militant anything.

Re: Non-fandom Secrets

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
While they might be similarly obnoxious to deal with on a personal level (but then again, so are people who are really obnoxiously passionate over anything), as a group, ultra-religious Christians are terrifying and dangerous. If they vote the way they believe, and most do, they basically take away a whole load of freedoms for a whole load of people. So, man. in the end I can never find it comparable.

Re: Non-fandom Secrets

[personal profile] mr_non_sequitur 2013-02-12 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the important thing is that you've found a way to feel superior to both.

Ultra-religious Christians: vote to send us back to a time when women died or were rendered sterile from illegal back-alley abortions, send lobbyists to countries like Uganda to encourage laws that make homosexuality a capital crime, think their children should be able to bully gay kids to the point of suicide in the name of "freedom of religion"

"Militant" atheists: write books about atheism and tell people on the internet that they're dumb for believing in God

Yeah, I can totally see why you think the atheists are the worse ones. 9_9
