I tested positive to HIV last week

Don't know how I got it, don't know how to tell people, just...dont' know. :/

Oh, sweetheart. Tell people when/if you're ready to tell them, and on your own terms. Do you have some kind of local support network where you can get information and talk to people about your thought process on the issue?

You best be telling any partners you've had in the past few years as well, anon. Those are the only people you're legally obligated to notify, but other than that... no need to rush out and inform the entire family. Not until you are in a position to deal with the massive amounts of worry and panic it'll cause.

The good news is that in this age of medicine, HIV is not a death sentence. Drug therapies are so good that there's only a very small chance of you ever developing AIDS, and an even better chance of finding a cost-effective cure in your lifetime. Medical science is extremely close, as it is.

There is hope, anon.

I'm a virgin so no problem there. Never been interested. Also why I don't know how I got it. I've never bothered with drugs and...just no idea.

I know it's no longer death sentance but I'm still having problems wrapping my mind around it and just the social stigma behind it. My subconscious won't let me move on from focussing on it. saw an expression a few days back, my is buffering on it. Just going over and over

Unfortunately contracting HIV can be as simple as a contaminated piece of equipment in a hospital or a cut finger at a restaurant. If you happened to have an ulcer in your mouth or you'd just flossed your teeth before going to the dentist and the equipment wasn't properly sterilized, you would be at risk of developing it. And then there's the simple poor luck of touching or handling someone else's blood or bodily fluids in a public area accidentally without washing your hands and then rubbing your eyes...

It wasn't your fault, OP. Bad luck happens. I know it seems overwhelming now, but you can deal with this, and the sooner you see a doctor and figure out what the best plan of attack is, you'll start to feel better and more in control again. It's going to be okay.

Get re-tested. False positives happen more often than you think.

Are you a college student? If so, many times counseling is free on campus. I would recommend you see a counselor who can introduce you to a support network. You might also try the local health department.

I hope things work out for you. Don't rush into telling your loved ones if you aren't comfortable with it; just focus on yourself right now. (I hope you can find someone to talk to about this though. A counselor or therapist, maybe.)

Thanks guys, it's nice how supportive it is here. Your encouragment made me a bit teary in the good way.

I don't know if there are resources you can get or places you can go or people you can talk to. I don't know how to help.

But I wish I could.

I'm sorry, Anon. I hope you can find a support network to help you process this. As other people have said, medication has come a long way in the past few decades, and they're doing some amazing things with bone marrow transplants, so stay positive. *hugs if wanted*
