Re: Cable sucks
Re: Cable sucks
(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 02:09 am (UTC)(link)So I'm googling it in Australia and apparently we do have it but it's a service you got to pay for and have installed but not very common and only present in some parts of major cities.
might be why I've never heard of it. I've mostly lived rural I've only ever used free to tv stations which just means plugging a tv into a power outlett and maybe attaching an antenna if i can't get recetption (antenna cable involved but never needed to hire anyone lol). All houses come with an antenna and satellite is the default for australia. i don't know anyone who uses 'cable tv'
I do know what a squirrel is :P

Re: Cable sucks
(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 03:55 am (UTC)(link)googling it has shown to me we do have some kind of cable in australian cities but it's not very common, only for paid tv and even in the cities you may not get it????
i live in the city but apaprently my suburb isn't supported by it.
Re: Cable sucks
(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 03:35 am (UTC)(link)most places i've lived have just used satellite options or phone cables for internet
So is cable tv/internet a completely separate cable to phone lines and antenna cables?
i've personally never encountered it and calling them 'cable' is just not a phrase I've heard of. Time to pop quiz my fellow aussies i think
i mean, obviously we have cable cables to use, but i don't know anything about these tv cables and internet cables
wiki says australia has cable for paid tv channels in some parts of the main cities http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_in_Australia#Cable_television
but most areas run satellite (apparently, the more you know!)
Re: Cable sucks
(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 04:10 am (UTC)(link)There is an even fancier cable option in my city, optical fiber cables. Fiber internet is faster than coaxial cable internet because the data density is even better. Imagine downloading a 4gb high-def movie in 2 minutes and a half, that's now fast it is. Unfortunately the infrastructure still new so it costs over $200/months for fiber and not everyone can get this service. Most people use the normal cable option that is ~10 times slower and costs ~$50/month.
Re: Cable sucks
(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 04:12 am (UTC)(link)Yes on the phone line, not sure on the antenna cables but probably yes too?
Cable TV/Internet is very popular in densely populated areas (big cities).
Where I live it is waaay cheaper than satellite, but there are also free/open channels (which kinda suck to be honest) if you really want to not spend money.
Piracy is also a big problem too (I'm not sure how they steal the cable signal, but it happens enough that there are ads on the TV saying that if they catch you doing it you can go to jail).
Re: Cable sucks
(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 04:42 am (UTC)(link)I learnt something yay :D
and conversations about cable make sense now. in the past I just skimmed past since I didn't really get what it was about beyond TV/internet related
I imagine the rarity and price of it is why i've not encoutnered the term prior. apparently it's expensive to set up across australia and basically a bother so I've apparently just not encountered it or people using it (that i can recall.)
but then aussie is not as densly populated as the US so we've made do with sattelite lol.
i've gotta go, thanks for the discussion tho. much appreciated!
