I personally like the Hobbit even more every time I re-read it, but I know where you're coming from, OP. Happened to me with other books. Although for me, it was more that when I read books whose target audience was way above my age level (I had really good reading comprehension when I was little) I thought grown-up books were OMG THE BEST THING EVER. And then when I read them again when I was the proper age, they were just kinda so-so.

10-yr-old-me: "OMG, Anne McCaffery is amazing! I wanna bronze dragon and a firelizard and I'm gonna be a Harper, and everything about these books is amazing!!!"
27-yr-old-me: "Ehhh, I could finish rereading this Pern book or I could unload the dishwasher..."

(I still do want a firelizard, though.)

Actually the Pern books were the opposite for me. As a kid I wanted all these random people to stop yacking about boring things and go back to having adventures.

And as an adult I appreciate the way all the storylines intertwine together.
