I know how you feel. I ruined Sonic and Metroid for myself that way.

I'm reading it now (The Hobbit) for the first time at age 23, and I like it, but think I might have liked it better if I read it when I was younger.

I personally like the Hobbit even more every time I re-read it, but I know where you're coming from, OP. Happened to me with other books. Although for me, it was more that when I read books whose target audience was way above my age level (I had really good reading comprehension when I was little) I thought grown-up books were OMG THE BEST THING EVER. And then when I read them again when I was the proper age, they were just kinda so-so.

10-yr-old-me: "OMG, Anne McCaffery is amazing! I wanna bronze dragon and a firelizard and I'm gonna be a Harper, and everything about these books is amazing!!!"
27-yr-old-me: "Ehhh, I could finish rereading this Pern book or I could unload the dishwasher..."

(I still do want a firelizard, though.)

Actually the Pern books were the opposite for me. As a kid I wanted all these random people to stop yacking about boring things and go back to having adventures.

And as an adult I appreciate the way all the storylines intertwine together.

I tried (as a 20something) to read The Hobbit. I had already read LOTR as a teen and loved it, but I just couldn't get into The Hobbit. I'm re-reading LOTR 11 years later, and I find it more enjoyable than I did as a teen.

I'm worried about re-reading LOTR too. I never found The Hobbit that interesting (when I was a kid, or during my recent re-read) but LOTR really changed my world around. (I was 13. Gimme a break) I'm scared it won't be as magical.

I've been meaning to reread LOTR too but haven't got around to it.

As for Hobbit, I kinda feel you. I reread it before the movie and still greatly enjoyed it, but definitely found more flaws in it this time around.

Maybe you'll have a completely different reaction to LOTR? You'll never know unless you try!

I reread The Hobbit before seeing the movie and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, especially since I can't read Lord of the Rings anymore.

Why not?

I don't get that with Tolkien - The Hobbit is the first chapter book I remember reading, and I've fallen more in love with it every time I've read it since - but I've had this happen with other books I loved when I was younger. But you engage with stuff differently at different ages, and while some things can be enjoyable forever, some things appeal to you more at certain times in your life. And that's okay, I think. But, yeah, it's sad to have fond memories a bit marred by a disappointing reread.

This is me. I find myself being able to appreciate the details and Tolkien's writing style so much more now. I love the LOTR books more than I do the movies now, when it was the opposite 10 years ago. I just started re-reading The Silmarillion after 11 years of thinking once is enough because it was an epic struggle to read it the first time, and I'm loving the fuck out of it so far.

The Silmarillion is so good, my favorite! LotR was what I really had trouble getting into the first time I read it, although I love it now. I just love all the history and language aspects so much, and after devouring The Silmarillion and all the History of Middle-earth stuff, I can always find new things about The Hobbit and LotR to appreciate on every reread.

Same, tbh. I kinda had to force myself through it. I honestly think the movies may be...better? D:

This is exactly what happened to me. I re-read The Hobbit in preparation for the movie and I was so so disappointed by it. I have wonderful nostalgia from childhood readings, and I'm almost afraid to reread LoTR now (although I last re-read LotR sans Hobbit ten years ago in prep for that run of movies and I wasn't disappointed then so *crosses fingers*).

Lord of the Rings is one of those stories that is pretty well timeless and stands up to multiple rereads. You'll be fine.

I can get that, though I only kinda liked The Hobbit. I was never really interested in reading it again.

The Silmarillion though is <3

I recently reread The Hobbit too, and LOTR. I was pretty disappointed in The Hobbit, but LOTR still did it for me.

lotr is different though i think youll still like it
