Episodes that your fandom hates, but you love

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
(Inspired by Secret #10): everyone's got episodes that the whole fandom seems to universally love, but you personally hate.

However, let's do the happier inverse of this! List an episode that the whole fandom seems to universally hate, but which you love.

Whether it's because you interpreted it differently, because you found it entertaining on a different level, because you liked a subplot of the episode too much to hate the whole episode even if you do think it was terrible, or because you just didn't think it was as bad as everyone else thought it was, let's celebrate loving unappreciated things!

Star Wars the second trilogy. I just. I don't understand why people hate it as they do. When I watched it, I saw little or no qualitative difference between it and the original trilogy. And I loved Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. [still do]

Ah, also it seems that Poirot fans dislike The Orient Express. It is one of my favourite episodes ever. IDK what to think.

It's easier to just say prequels. "Second trilogy" confuses.

In any case, I think it is worse than the original. Now, don't get me wrong--I think the hate for it is overblown. And I feel like punching anyone who posts that goddamn Red Letter Media twenty hour review thing in the eye. Seriously. His points are funny, but a lot of them are very poor.

Anyhow--a lot of the love from the originals comes from the fact is was unique then. It didn't really introduce too many concepts, but it definitely popularized them and brought a lot of them together. Princess Leia made today would have been sexist as hell, but back then it was an incredible surprise to see a beautiful princess character snark at the hero.

The prequels were just completely done.

I actually really love Doctor Who's Love and Monsters. Okay, the ending gag with, "And we have a love life" bit actually did make me gag but the rest was really sweet. I like how all of these misfits found each other because of the Doctor and made a make-shift family. Everyone had great chemistry with each other. And sometimes it's nice to see how the Doctor affects people once he is gone.

Yeah, I really liked this episode for the most part. I thought a lot of it was sweet. The monster was stupid, but my biggest issue was the ending. All of them dying, really? It felt so needless, so pointless. It took an episode that I thought was charming and different and just made me roll my eyes and sigh.

That was the first Doctor Who episode I watched. =) Liked it, got super impressed by the Doctor, still a fan.

I really enjoyed the Buffy episode Dead Man's Party and honestly don't quite understand what everyone hated about it. Yeah, the characters were all arguing, but they all seemed to have pretty valid points and no one was horrible about it IMO. (I wouldn't mind if someone clued me in to what they hated about it though. I might just be oblivious.)

I was always in and out of Buffy fandom so I didn't even know people hated that episode, but I liked it.

I always liked when the Buffy characters argued though because it made them more realistic to me, and as much as I love Buffy the character she DID need to be called out on her shit some times.

To me that's what makes Buffy/Angel better superhero series then most, all hero characters are hypocrites and make bad choices at times, Buffy and Angel at least got called out about it. I can't stand hypocritical hero characters who never get called out.

I like Buffy's "Beer Bad" a lot.

I'm still somewhat baffled at why everyone thought "Beer Bad" from Buffy was so...well...bad. I thought it was obvious that it was supposed to be goofy and faux-PSA-esque?

I also don't get why people hate the Doctor Who episode "Boom Town". I know it was quiet and slow and had a very simple plot, but that's exactly what I liked about it. It was a perfect breather to have between The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and the two part finale. Also, Nine/Rose/Jack being OT3 and lovely and just kinda chilling out.

I also don't get what people hated about The Happiness Patrol. Is it just left over hatred from people who were actually around during the Thatcher years, or is it some British thing I'm just not gonna understand?

I just hated the Slitheen. What stupid aliens.

Boom Town had Nine/Rose/Jack adorableness. It was qt as hell!

I'm always bad at thinking of specific episodes but I will just say Season 4 of Angel, I really enjoyed a lot of episodes in that season and I never got why so many people in fandom hated it. I know a lot of people were bitter about Cordy, and I loved Cordelia too, but there were so many things I loved in that season.

I will echo sentiments about about Love & Monsters in Doctor Who, I liked the episode. I especially loved Jackie in that episode and how it explored her character's feelings.

I liked season 4 of Angel as well. The treatment of Cordy was crap, but there were a few really good plot twists that actually made me gasp out loud. I also really liked Wes/Lilah.

ARE YOU ME? Because I agree with everything you just wrote re: Season 4 of Angel.

I actually bought the 4th season on DVD (and I NEVER pay for television!) to watch certain episodes over again. Season 4 had so many wonderful things- Lilah/Wesley, Faith, Angelus fucking with everyone's head, Skip being evil, "Cordy" being evil, JASMINE, Fred and the magic bullet, Wesley/Angel ("Hearts get in the way" and meaningful looks during "Sacrifice"), ending world peace. IT WAS AMAZEBALLS

I absolutely love Brain Storm from the 5th season of Stargate Atlantis. Almost everyone I've seen seems to hate, or at the very most, just see it as "okay."

I think a large part has to do with it being the canonizing Keller/McKay episode in a fandom where Sheppard/McKay rules. But even ignoring that, come on! It's got Bill Nye and Neil DeGrasse Tyson in supporting roles playing themselves! What's not to love?!

I think TNG's Sub Rosa is a fantastic episode. ...So there.

All of them! no seriously my problem is that no matter what I usually at least like something about every episode of whatever show I'm watching. So when people are all "OMG THAT EPISODE SUCKED IT'S HORRIBLE" my brain jumps to "but it had x which was cool!" which in the end is ridiculous because there's also usually perfectly valid reasons for not liking the episode.

This is usually what I do too! I do it more often with characters everybody hates, but yeah I definitely relate to the "mind jumping to the good part" bit ;)

IDK if people hate it, I think they just forget it exists. Still, Stargate Atlantis: The Ark. (There are a few good McShep moments, okay?)

I know everybody hates season 7 of Supernatural, but I don't hate it that much. I thought the simplicity was kind of charming. Idk I just don't have as much beef with it as other people do. Besides, I liked the break from Castiel.

Spoilers for MLP finale

[personal profile] inkmage 2013-02-13 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna cheat a bit and go with one that hasn't technically happened yet. (Spoilers for the Friendship is Magic finale - even though they're kind of everyone some people are avoiding it.)

Twilight turns into a alicorn. The fandom (at least on EQD) seems basically split between "meh, the writers might salvaged something" and "IT'S RUINED FOREVER D:" whereas I'm like "oh my gosh this is gonna be so awesome right guys! :D Guys?"

Re: Spoilers for MLP finale

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't even been watching this season but my reaction was basically "Aw, she looks cute."

I mean come on guys, it's HASBRO, and as much as the awesome MLP team tends to put a lot into the series, they still gotta sell toys sometimes.

Plus I kind of want a Twilight Alicorn toy...

...yes I'm an adult >.>

I actually really loved the Doctor Who episodes "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End". I see the problems in it, I definitely do ... But it takes everything, every theme, from every season of New Who up until then and ties them together, which is great because I loved how every season finale revealed and tied up (more or less) the theme of the season, and now the same thing was done in turn with those finales, so everything sort of converged into a single point of almost everything I love about Doctor Who.

And Rose shows up and is AWESOME, and Jack is there and is Jack Harkness, and Martha is there, and Mickey (who is a lot better than he was in S1), and SO MANY OTHERS - I have a huge weakness for "everyone finally meets everyone" things in stories. And there's that stupid silly wonderful scene with the Earth being towed by the TARDIS while a choral version of the Ood Song of Freedom plays in the background. And Donna in superpower mode playing around with Daleks. And Dalek Caan pwning the other Daleks; also being really creepy in a fun way. And so on.

"Loyalty" parts 1 & 2 from Criminal Intent. Everybody's always all "This is a procedural! No personal shit!" but I love the personal shit.
