The problem is that the meme is the lingua franca of the internet, and the meme is an insufficient format for discussing social issues.

Bingo cards, trope names, macros and pithy one-liners are great as a short hand. But then you need to also have a forum where you can back that up with a longer discussion of what are by definition complex and often counter-intuitive concepts.

The SJWs get stuck on the short hand and tie themselves in knots tying themselves to the letter of the law of pet phrases that quickly become divorced from their context.

That said, I vastly prefer SJWs to the casual sexists that make up the majority of the internet outside fandom. At least I believe that their indignation is well-meaning. At least they're working on developing their critical reading. At least they might develop greater nuance over time. At least they probably won't ever vote against my rights.

I'll take "'lame' is ableist" over "make me a sammitch" any day of the week.

Well said.

Thank you for this post, it is a great written out version of why I can't dislike SJW's that much. As annoying as it can be to deal with I will take most parts of SJWness including the occasional "Go fuck Yourself" when I say something problematic over the casual homophobia I often see elsewhere.

I rather think I love you. Or, to put it in non-shorthand ... you've delineated what I also perceive to be both the strengths and shortcomings of online society and online society's discussion abilities.
