My favourite LJ community was ruined by SJWs, so I feel you. Worst of all it was a snarking community. Suddenly we couldn't wish death on someone who's pissed us off, or call them crazy... in a snark post! Everytime I see someone suggest using "step on legos" as a substitute I want to strangle a kitten.

(Of course I don't want to literally strangle a kitten, but figures of speech and exaggeration are a mystery to these people.)

I understand this notion but being a black female, everything is about social justice. I can't just forget that I'm black for a second in fandom. There's zero representation in my fandoms so I constantly find myself feeling like an other. A lot of the time social justice isn't something you can choose to advocate for or bring up. I'm a living, breathing, person who can never "escape from dealing with all that."

Idk, personally I think understanding social injustices actually helps me get a firmer grasp on what NOT to do, so I can build up a community-oriented approach that is inclusive of everyone when I do fandom stuff.

Hell, fandom was how I found out what feminism was, all those years ago. But I think the corners I used hang in are more about discussing things critically in general. I haven't experienced the more recent influx of Tumblr-style "CHECK UR PRIVILEGE" types, because I've limited my involvement in fandom by a lot in the past year.

I actually find a lot of their points/meta/comments interesting when they don't take it too far. Truth be told, I'm only truly bothered by the Warn For Everything Brigade. I understand trigger warnings and why they're important, but it's when I start getting people harassing me for not labeling my drunk!sex fic as dubcon/noncon (despite the fact that the warnings included drunken!sex and it was otherwise fully consensual) that my hackles start going up. Taking it too far, like I said. :/

Yeah, I've reached a point where SJers can just eat me. 95% of the time, I don't give a fuck if something "problematic." LIFE is problematic. Stories that are 100% non-problematic are a) virtually impossible, and 2) BORING. Unless all you care about is fluff, conflict is the name of the game. You can't have drama without conflict, and it's unreasonable to expect all conflict to be sanitized for everybody's delicate sensibilities.

People who can't deal with that can go have hugboxy circle-jerks about the meanness of the world and GTFO of my way.

I got banned from ffr on LJ because of my inability to resist attempting to reason with SJers. My current hugest temptation is to make a sock account, go back there, RP as Kankri Vantas without the typing quirk, and see how many people agree with me.

SJWs on the internet don't bother me. It's easy enough to treat their particular brand of ridiculousness with a hearty eye-roll, and the ability to scroll on by. For me, it is SJWs I encounter IRL, that I end up being irritated by. To me, their SJW-ness (is that even a word? lol) comes off as: "Oh, I'll pity you for your problems, and pat myself on the back for pointing out to you and anyone who'll listen, just how wonderful a person I am for patronizing you." UGH.

SN: Yes, I fall under more than one category of "minority" [not going to list them here, because seriously, so-the-f!%# what? It's just the hand I've been dealt] and damn it irritates me all the unwanted "Awwww, poor you" I get from most average people.

If you know about Social Justice Sally (which I'm assuming since you used a picture of it), then you know not all of the Internet (and fandom) are all up in arms on social justice and insane.

What REALLY annoys me about many SJWs is their lack of research. I don't know how many times I've seen people get riled up about sensationalist headlines and angry! Tumblr! Posts! without reading the actual article. SO many people go, "THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING!" when, if they'd actually read the attached news article, no, the sky is not falling. You're just taking a sensationalist headline at face value.

I think people who are upset about things like A: TLA's movie casting, "Fake Comic Book Girls," and banning the word "gay" from schools have an actual right to be upset. People who are getting riled up for the sake of getting riled up do not. And don't get me started on many SJW's treatment of trans* people.

I think the worst thing about SJWs is that they're right just as often as they are wrong. But since they're such horrible people, everyone will associate the good things they say with SJW horribleness.

In that way they are doing more harm than good for real social justice activists.

Yeah, worrying about where you may be stepping out of line can be very frustrating, and even at times upsetting. Thing is, I know I am considered privileged, and understand that my feeling uncomfortable at times is only because I only fully understand my own point of view. Privileged society is afraid of asking questions, afraid of educating themselves...because those things often mean leaving their happy little privileged cocoons and learning just how ridiculously babied we are. Even as adults. If we're getting upset because someone called us out on an incorrect pronoun (I mean, really?), we're just babies.

Like I said, though, I only fully know my own point of view...and from where I stand, as long as nobody's getting lynched for asking questions, social justice is a pretty good thing.

I think the "Warrior" part is a bigger problem than the "Social Justice" part. Social justice is great (although some things are best kept to private messages/short and sweet, in order to keep discussions on topic), but way too often it's used as an excuse for abuse and bullying. And way too often those abusers and bullies honestly believe they have the moral high ground and can use pretty much any tactics they feel like since they're doing it for a good cause. This tends to be a recipe for disaster.
