but see the way you said all of this politely without screaming at op for being a terrible person and accusing them of various isms for not wanting to deal with all of the crap online that they have to deal with irl (they did say they're not privileged) pretty much rules you out as one of the people they are complaining about. Also different people deal with things in different ways, but I'm pretty sure that telling people to go die in a fire because they aren't shipping the politically correct pairing or sth (yay fandom "justice"!) isn't gonna actually accomplish anything.

The tone argument does not mean the people you're screaming at have any obligation to take anything you say to heart.

The amount of sj-oriented people that are huge assholes that care more about getting a power trip from 'calling people out' is greatly exaggerated. I see far more people being overdefensive dicks about people pointing out problems in media than people being super judgemental and accusatory.

sure, now gb2 tumblr

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really haven't seen nearly as much over-the-top criticism as I have people going, "YOU SAY THIS IS RACIST BUT IT CAN'T BE RACIST BECAUSE FUCK YOU, SJW. LA LA LA." Like I'm sure some SJWs take it way too far (for example, the people I've seen arguing that interracial couples are inherently reflective of racist hierarchies??), but most of the time I see people who are super defensive because they got embarrassed by their own bullshit.

Yep. Riley and their ilk are total shitholes as far as I am concerned but they are not nearly as prevalent in fandom as people whining about evil SJWs. The amount of people complaining about jerkass SJWs is extremely disproportionate to the amount of jerkass SJWs themselves.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"but most of the time I see people who are super defensive because they got embarrassed by their own bullshit."

The thought hadn't occurred to me before, but that's a great explanation for this phenomenon. Case in point: secret whining vaguely about people going on about social justice. If they hate "thinking" about it so much, why do they keep creating arguments out of thin air? (And there's no way blanket accusations like that aren't going to get responses...)

Yep, this. It even happened in a discussion I had with close friends. Not once did I yell, snark, accuse or even mention the word "racism", but I still got the OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU ARE RUINING MY FUNTIMES WITH THIS TALK OF WHY THERE AREN'T ANY POCS IN THE _______ FANDOM ALL I SAID WAS THAT I DIDN'T WANT A [MAIN CHARACTER] WHO WAS BLACK IT'S JUST PERSONAL PREFERENCES I'M NOT RACIST HOW DARE YOU, etc. etc.

Worst thing was, they know damn well I'm a PoC and they still didn't see anything wrong with saying they didn't want to have a PoC as a main character because of reasons. I'M the asshole pointing out this is bullshit.

This is pretty much my entire beef with the SJ debacle all together. Both sides keep delegitimizing the other, and no one is willing to work towards a middle ground of "hey, let's advocate social issues and spread social justice in a positive and encouraging way!".

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Likewise. I suspect that the latter party just likes having an excuse to not give a shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe depends on where you go. Check out ffr or ontd_p. I'm pretty sure they collectively orgasm every time they find the tiniest excuse to dogpile someone, and call them racist fucks, and ban them for politely trying to engage in an argument. I'm not exaggerating at all. I fit a couple "minority" groups myself, and I'm an advocate - but there's being an advocate and there's being a SJW. It's one thing to say something and speak up when someone does say something shitty (and paying close attention to whether or not it was intentional or a stupid thing they didn't think about) while not discounting them as a person, and there's what SJW do.

Okay, I will give you that FFR is full of power-tripping wankers (and I maintain that the one mod was that one anon on the ffr anon community that talked about how it's okay to abuse his SO because he has an MI, buuuut I mean I have no proof of that, it's just that the writing and argument style, with the 'all about me' and the guilt-tripping and such seem so very similar...).

But that's just one community. A sizeable one, okay, but they're like this one small extreme end. And at least half the time the people they get mad at are genuinely being jerks.

In my experience, it was the SJWs turning into jerks first. Someone makes a remark which is racist or sexist or whatever, but instead of first saying "hey, that word/phrase/thing is racist/sexist/whatever" (because, you know, fandom is an extremely diverse place with people from a broad spectrum of places and times, and as such not everyone will have the background to understand these right off the bat or know that what they said has such negative connotations), they often just say "You're a racist/sexist/bigot for saying that!" And if they just try to explain they genuinely did not know it was, or ask for an explanation or how/why that remark they made is racist/sexist/otherwise-unfortunate, the usual reaction is something along the lines of "It's not my job to help you!".

Usually somewhere in there, the original person who made that unfortunate remark turns into a jerk because, well, everyone else was being a jerk to them. Maybe not the smartest or best thing to do, but honestly I can't really blame them for reacting that way when they're in that position.

while not discounting them as a person

That's a huge thing. It really doesn't matter in any given moment whether someone is racist/(cis)sexist/homophobic. What matters is that they maybe said something racist/(cis)sexist/homophobic, and debating their problematic opinion rather than (possibly problematic but really well and truly irrelevant) their personality is a pretty good way to distinguish between someone who's only trying to bully and someone who's bringing forth a genuine complaint.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, even though I have quietly gritted my teeth at a few very sercon types myself.

This is very true. I also suspect a great deal of SJW bad behavior comes from people who are fed up with dealing with the overdefensive dicks and forgot to take a break from the internet, and so they end up yelling at some random person who made a mistake. (And so the vicious spiral continues ...) That's no excuse for threats, harrassment and other kinds of bullying, but it could explain some of it.
