I understand this notion but being a black female, everything is about social justice. I can't just forget that I'm black for a second in fandom. There's zero representation in my fandoms so I constantly find myself feeling like an other. A lot of the time social justice isn't something you can choose to advocate for or bring up. I'm a living, breathing, person who can never "escape from dealing with all that."

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
You mean zero representation in the fanworks? Because in most fandoms if you're a girl of any ethnicity you get little to none representation anyway, period.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
+1 for truth.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
but see the way you said all of this politely without screaming at op for being a terrible person and accusing them of various isms for not wanting to deal with all of the crap online that they have to deal with irl (they did say they're not privileged) pretty much rules you out as one of the people they are complaining about. Also different people deal with things in different ways, but I'm pretty sure that telling people to go die in a fire because they aren't shipping the politically correct pairing or sth (yay fandom "justice"!) isn't gonna actually accomplish anything.

tone argument!!!!!!!!

The tone argument does not mean the people you're screaming at have any obligation to take anything you say to heart.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
The amount of sj-oriented people that are huge assholes that care more about getting a power trip from 'calling people out' is greatly exaggerated. I see far more people being overdefensive dicks about people pointing out problems in media than people being super judgemental and accusatory.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
sure, now gb2 tumblr

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really haven't seen nearly as much over-the-top criticism as I have people going, "YOU SAY THIS IS RACIST BUT IT CAN'T BE RACIST BECAUSE FUCK YOU, SJW. LA LA LA." Like I'm sure some SJWs take it way too far (for example, the people I've seen arguing that interracial couples are inherently reflective of racist hierarchies??), but most of the time I see people who are super defensive because they got embarrassed by their own bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Riley and their ilk are total shitholes as far as I am concerned but they are not nearly as prevalent in fandom as people whining about evil SJWs. The amount of people complaining about jerkass SJWs is extremely disproportionate to the amount of jerkass SJWs themselves.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"but most of the time I see people who are super defensive because they got embarrassed by their own bullshit."

The thought hadn't occurred to me before, but that's a great explanation for this phenomenon. Case in point: secret whining vaguely about people going on about social justice. If they hate "thinking" about it so much, why do they keep creating arguments out of thin air? (And there's no way blanket accusations like that aren't going to get responses...)

Likewise. I suspect that the latter party just likes having an excuse to not give a shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe depends on where you go. Check out ffr or ontd_p. I'm pretty sure they collectively orgasm every time they find the tiniest excuse to dogpile someone, and call them racist fucks, and ban them for politely trying to engage in an argument. I'm not exaggerating at all. I fit a couple "minority" groups myself, and I'm an advocate - but there's being an advocate and there's being a SJW. It's one thing to say something and speak up when someone does say something shitty (and paying close attention to whether or not it was intentional or a stupid thing they didn't think about) while not discounting them as a person, and there's what SJW do.

I agree, even though I have quietly gritted my teeth at a few very sercon types myself.

This is very true. I also suspect a great deal of SJW bad behavior comes from people who are fed up with dealing with the overdefensive dicks and forgot to take a break from the internet, and so they end up yelling at some random person who made a mistake. (And so the vicious spiral continues ...) That's no excuse for threats, harrassment and other kinds of bullying, but it could explain some of it.

I'm sorry that's how you feel. I'm an Asian Muslim (sort of, let's not get into technicalities rn) and most my representation is negative/stupid as fuck but idrc. I enjoy fandom for what it is because lbr, it's fiction.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
i guess i just don't understand why anybody or anything needs representation in fandom. i like a lot of variety of things, none of which has to do with being white or female or living in america or being in my twenties. i can relate to any sentient being who has human qualities...black, white, gay, android, whatever. i'm into a lot of stuff where the fanbases are primarily my opposite gender or primarily younger than i am...i guess i just don't know why it matters. i just like what i like, and i participate in any way i can.

but i'm not you...so who knows..*shrug*

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
it matters because when everyone is expected to be able to identify with cis straight white males it sets them up as the normal state of being and makes everyone else into an 'other' with limited options and opportunities to have real personality or agency

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
i guess i just don't see it that way. ideas of 'normal' or 'other' don't have any meaning for me, they never have. i find it hard to even understand those concepts, let alone identify them.

Eh, I'm like this too. I honestly have an easier time identifying with a character that's different from me than one that looks exactly like me. The people replying to you are asshole who can't fathom why you'd be able to feel empathy with someone who is not a carbon copy of you.

SJA =/= SJW

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-02-13 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Then you're an SJA, not an SJW.

Presuming, of course, that your initial response to seeing something racist is closer to "Hey, this is racist, would you mind doing something about it?" rather than "YOU'RE A RACIST AND AN AWFUL PERSON FOR NOT KNOWING THIS IS RACIST!"

Though out of curiosity (really, not trying to be accusing here) - how, exactly, is the 'lack of representation' an issue for you in fandom? Because in the vast majority of fandom, if you're not delving into SJ issues/personal issues, then most things like race, gender, etc are non-issues. All we are interacting with is names, avatars, and text/images - that is all others see of us unless you choose to tell them otherwise, and that is generally all you will see of them. As someone whose race has next to no representation in American media whatsoever (much less than black representation), this boggles my mind. The only time my race ever comes up is if there's a discussion about racism, and even then it only comes up about half the time, if that. If you are not actively discussing your own race, when does this come up and how?
