Yeah, I've reached a point where SJers can just eat me. 95% of the time, I don't give a fuck if something "problematic." LIFE is problematic. Stories that are 100% non-problematic are a) virtually impossible, and 2) BORING. Unless all you care about is fluff, conflict is the name of the game. You can't have drama without conflict, and it's unreasonable to expect all conflict to be sanitized for everybody's delicate sensibilities.

People who can't deal with that can go have hugboxy circle-jerks about the meanness of the world and GTFO of my way.

Conflict != problematic content.

It does to some of these folks.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
It is to these people though. And apparently writing any characters with shitty viewpoints is terrible, even when the writer downright states the character is a shitty dick.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I heard they tried to make the creator of Homestuck apologize for his antagonist being a sexist.

So....villains being villains is politically incorrect or they just can't comprehend the idea that the character is not the author even when it should be obvious.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly the fandom I was thinking of.

And the even more ridiculous thing is... Caliborn is supposed to embody a certain attitude you find in the Homestuck fandom. Like how Calliope is supposed to be an expy of the fandom portion that kinda (overly) invests themselves in characters and shipping and fanart and stuff, Caliborn is supposed to be an expy for the crueler part, the part that just wants explosions, no girly feel-y mushy stuff, all girls are only bitches for eyecandy, skip to the good (AKA action) parts, that kinda attitude. He is supposed to be sexist. That is what he is based on.

They did the same thing with Cronus. Apparently Hussie is terrible for writing him. Yeah, he is a shitty character. He's a nice guy douchebag and everything. But Hussie never agreed with him, he even pointed out how much of a douche he is. The narrative does not agree with him. All the other characters acknowledge he is terrible (minus one who is, hilariously, an expy for the SJW-tumblr culture). But even so apparently just writing a ~problematic~ character is ~problematic~ in the eyes of some of these idiots.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Way back just after the shooshpapping scene, I saw someone accuse Hussie of homophobia because all the gay crushes and relationships crashed and burned and hiding behind But Not Too Gay with Karkat and Gamzee because moirallegiance is romantic but not sexual. Given that the characters in question were thirteen, I doubt Hussie would canonically confirm them as having any sex at all anyway, and the straight crushes and relationships turned out just as bad if not worse. (Admittedly the one semi-functional relationship at that point was KaRezi, but look how that's turning out now.)

Meh, most of the complaining I've seen about Cronus isn't about the character himself but about the segment of his fanbase that keeps making excuses for him and downplay the shittiness of his behavior.

I have to admit I'm surprised the fandom never made much of an outcry about Equius, Aradia, and the emotion chip. I would be horrified if that was an actually-possible thing that happened to someone, though I admit I don't think Equius is evil for it so much as stupid and unfortunately-taught (he's a thirteen-year-old boy raised in a culture which would praise him for taking advantage of those "below" him).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear I hate the word problematic.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
there's a world of difference in writing about problematic content and not realizing it's problematic and dealing with it in a way that shows your ass, and writing about problematic content and going into it realizing it's problematic and dealing with it in a way that shows depth and understanding and respect.

You sound like you don't know how to do that. Shine on, if it makes you feel better to just kanyeshrug your way out of arguments.

+1

because i'd much rather read about narrow-minded assholes doing shitty things and getting angry and frustrated and fucking up than gay trans women of colour discussing their veganism in a polite and respectful manner

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I was gonna make a joke about this but I mistyped veganism as vaganism and that's a lot funnier.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'd actually like to read a story that was about gay trans women of colour being narrow-minded assholes doing shitty things and getting angry and frustrated and fucking up while occasionally taking breaks from that to discuss their veganism in a polite and respectful manner.

That would be the coolest thing ever.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
The internet would implode.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I want to read that story too! And stories about ... nonbinary people of color doing shitty things in a polite and respectful manner while occasionally taking breaks from getting angry and frustrated to discuss their being narrow-minded assholes over delicious or crappy vegan cooking. For instance.

(Can I give you a book rec? Because you might want to check out Sara Lövestam's books, if they're available in a language you speak (she writes in Swedish, and at least two of her books have been translated to French and possibly other languages too). I think you'd like them.)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck yes!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you understand what SJ-oriented people actually care about

Personally, I'd love to see some fucked up story about a female serial killer murdering men who got away with horrific crimes and telling herself she's a hero when really she's basically just a sociopathic vigilante murderer.

Or some fantasy story about a black girl who has to reclaim her kingdom from an evil uncle.

Or some sci-fi about a trans man who witnesses the death of someone close to him and invents a time machine to save them.

The problem isn't that stories have conflict or are about morally grey characters, it's that far too few stories allow flawed main characters to be anything other than straight, white, cis and male.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Those first two I could see, but not that last one. Not because a trans character doing cool shit isn't valid, but because--unless we're talking internet publishing--it would require too much in-story explanation if you're aiming at a general audience. Most people have no idea that there is even a disagreement over transgender vs transsexual, much less how to work that into a general story that wasn't entirely about being trans. It would require a lot of work, and that's really the thing: writing about people with an identity you aren't familiar with is hard.

It wouldn't have to be that hard, or that explain-y. And who says a cis person or a woman should write it?

But really, why should it be harder to write about a trans man than about, say, a cis man living in the 1950's? If you want to be a good writer, you need to learn about things. Authors research stuff all the time; I don't see why this should be so much more difficult.

That actually exists, it's a movie called Hard Candy. Saaadly, no SJW would object to it I think? Because there isn't much of a feminist spin on it. Maybe it's cause the MC is young, idk.

But check it out! It's a gorgeously shot, tense movie.

Currently writing a fantasy story involving characters of colour and one with autism. Their skin colour and differently-abled-ness(?) causes some problems for them but it's not the main focus of the story; the main focus of the story is that they're trying not to die in a hideously horrible manner. As all good fantasy stories should be :)
