Who is teaching white girls they should hate themselves? I am asking sincerely, because I have seen this accusation before, but it matches literally none of my experiences with gender studies or sociology, like, at all.

It's not happening in academic settings, it's happening here on the internet - every comment that accuses SJWs of being "straight white girls" is pretty much saying, "stop having an opinion because your experiences don't count." Just because they take it too far doesn't mean there isn't a grain of truth in what they're saying :/ (I mean, yes, some of them are absolute morons and have no idea what they're on about, but that has next to nothing to do with their race, gender, or sexuality. Every single person has the capability of being an asswipe.)

sa - inb4 "ohnoes poor white girls!"

Yes, how dare I assert that we shouldn't make assumptions about people's race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or life experiences just because they sometimes say stupid shit on the internet. Shame on me!

That can be... tricky, I guess. On the one hand, straight white women have historically benefitted way more from feminism than have WOC or LGBT people, and there are plenty of straight white feminists who do need to learn to shut up for a second when the subject is race or LGBT rights or any kind of intersectionality that they may not have experienced first-hand, because advocacy is important, but sometimes advocacy means letting those people speak for themselves. Talking over them is just entrenching a different power hierarchy.

OTOH, I don't get why that means an automatic dismissal of them as "straight white girls" as a whole, unless they are actively, stupidly discussing LGBT issues or race or something that white, straight ciswomen legitimately don't have experience with. I have never understood that kind of silencing, or why this means they should feel like shitty people or why SJWs get accused of having or trying to make people feel "white guilt"; it's not about feeling guilty. In fact, it has very little to do with your feelings and very much to do with other people's, you know? So you make a mistake, you learn from it, you apologize, and you move the fuck on with your new awareness and try not to do it again. Nobody tried to make you wallow in guilt. They just said, "Hey, could you quit that?"

On my third hand, the impression that I'm getting is that most SJWs *and* their detractors have a Wikipedia-level (at best) understanding of how various feminisms and other forms of activism actually work.

... Or, to be more precise, I agree that way too often it seems to be used to belittle social justice activists who happen to be straight, white, young and female (sometimes the 'young' isn't even necessary), and who say something the recipient doesn't want to hear. If someone is wrong, it should be easy to point out how they are wrong without making it about the person rather than what they say, and if they're right, what's the problem? (Except in cases where the discussion is actually taken over by people not affected by the form of discrimination in question.)

It also plays into stereotypes about white women being sheltered/vulnerable (with the obvious contrast being that women of colour are tougher/less vulnerable, which although maybe positive-sounding is part of the whole 'raise white women on a pedestal and look at women of colour as exotic and animalistic' thing that is part of institutional racism.

It's also sexist, because even though there are a shit ton of white men that get on a smug high horse about calling people out and being super-enlightened about all sorts of issues if we characterize them all as women we can safely ignore them because women are just so silly and hysterical, amirite?

Sorry, just, the whole "SJWs are just a bunch of screechy women" thing really, really bugs me. Most of the most obnoxious SJWs I can think of aren't women. Even if they were, saying we should ignore them because they're women is really fucked up.

idk, I'm a Straight White Girl (TM) and I totally get where people are coming from when they complain about this. It's like if I tried to commandeer discussions about racism or the LGBT community and tell other people what they should think. It's one thing to be in support of minorities and equality and speak out against slurs and hate, but it's another thing to think that my opinion somehow becomes more valid than theirs.

It's like with sexism - if I see a man speak out against sexism, that's good. It's another voice. If I see a man telling *me* what is and isn't sexist or shit like that (and it's happened more than once...) that pisses me off. I don't wanna be that person.
