Re: I'm about to watch the first Buffy ep (not the unaired pilot)

I think season one is very important to watch if you're going to get into Buffy. Like, really important. Tonally, there's a slight shift, but I don't see this vast difference between the way they feel.

And I kind of think that School Hard and What's My Line are really fandom darling episodes (featuring a largely fandom darling character) and I don't think they'll have the same affect on someone who hasn't seen what came before.

Excellent information! Thank you, I haven't started anything yet, because people were advising me to skip ahead, but I wanted to know if there was anything important in season 1 first. If so, I'd have to watch!

Thank you for your comment <3

Nothing important happens in season 1 than you need to see. I have no idea what castle_anon is talking about. You can watch the later episodes of the show just fine without watching season one.

The only "important" thing that happens in season one is a very technical plot point in the season finale that very impersonally precipitates certain later events, but that gets re-explained perfectly sufficiently in "What's My Line" so that you can understand it just fine without seeing season 1. It's no more "important" than backstory.

Yes, you CAN watch season two and be just fine without having seen season one, but I think having those (fairly important moments) just talked about in a bit of exposition versus actually seeing them go down pales in comparison.

Because it's not just about "these actions happened," it's about feeling the characters and having a better understanding of how events affect them and where they're coming from in future episodes.

That's not to say EVERY episode of season one is a great must-watch, but many of them offer valuable insight into not only the people but the stories to come.

Nope.

I didn't watch season one for AGES and I was completely fine with Buffy. School Hard and What's My Line were two of the earliest episodes I ever watched, they explained the important bits of season one very well, and they were what made me fall in love with the show. If I had watched any of the season 1 episodes first, it would have taken me a LOT longer.
