KotOR II was Obsidian, not BioWare. Not much foreshadowing when it's from an entirely different company, you know...

In any case, I like BioWare's romances, and I think anyone who wants them cut is a selfish asshole (seriously, optional content is optional), but I think it would be devoting WAAAY too many resources to that aspect of the game if you could start hooking up your companions willy nilly.

Besides that, it makes the characters weaker. Most people would not just date ANYONE. In Dragon Age: Origins, Alistair would never date Morrigan, but I can see him hooking up with Leliana (indeed, he actually does in a DLC). I can only see more complaining from fans if they allow you to hook some characters up but not all characters. People already bitch if they can't romance so-and-so character, regardless of whether it's in their personality (for instance, Sten), I can't imagine how annoyed and entitled people would get if they couldn't just hook up characters as they saw fit.

That's what fanfiction is for, after all---the thousands of hookups forbidden by canon!

Oh, I know it was from a different company.

Just commenting on the fact that both endings were less than satisfactory. In KOTOR II's case, I think they may have been expecting a KOTOR III to happen.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Being that KOTOR was Bioware's to begin with and Obsidian had to work with Bioware's material, I think it's a valid observation.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
The endings of the two movies are so eerily alike it feels like virtual foreshadowing. Hell, ME3's ending made me think of K2's ending so much it's not funny. I think it's a legitimate observation, because, if memory serves, KOTOR was originally Bioware, right? Obsidian had to work with what Bioware had. So, the observation is not as offbase as you would like to call it.

Entitled? Oh, the snooty "those entitled fans" mentality. You come off as judgemental calling people selfish for wanting to see something different, or see other options. Yeah, I know all about the resources when writing a game, etc, etc, but it still makes you look like a complete ass for being so judgemental. You're whining about bitching fans who dare to have an opinion instead of understanding YMMV.

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-02-15 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, tou-chy! Look at you, with your big boy pants on!

Yeah, it's pretty entitled to bitch in a scenario where you have personal romantic interests, romantic interests you can hook up together, and THEN complaining you can't hook up the two characters you really, really wanted to, fuck characterization and budget!

Pretty damn entitled.

I don't care if you want more options, I care if you're the type of person who's going to bitch the devs that you're not getting them.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Like I said, judgemental.

People are entitled to their opinions, whether or not you can stand that entiltlement yourself- They should be able to express their opinions without the judgemental noise.

Bioware and the devs are grown up, you don't need to be their voice. They can stand to hear feedback from their paying customers. That's how business works, no matter what they or you may think should be otherwise.

LOL

Agree so hard on all points!

ME3's ending reminds me so much of K2's depressing ending it was a foreshadowing, I don't give a shit about it being written by two different companies. Because it is so true.

Yeah, Bioware can stand to expand more romance options. Especially same sex only ones.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Same-sex romance options need to be a thing in many more games.

AYRT

YES!

What I remember most vividly about KotOR 2's ending was how they ran out of ideas and/or budget and/or time and filled a gazillion identical rooms with random enemies to pad it out. And the animated lightsabres that had more hit points than a fucking Sith Lord because screw you, that's why. The actual ending itself was at least in keeping with the tone of the game.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
The creators had a lot of ideas, but they run out of time. Or to be more exact, they were forced to pubish the game sooner. So they had to cut out content and rush the ending. I've played it with restored content and it was awesome. One could only dream how awesome it could have been if it was finished.

I like how Dragon Age II did romances the best - every character is bisexual. In fact, I prefer that to "same sex only", and yes, I'm gay. It's because that inevitably means opposite-sex only romances, which I so do NOT dig. It's an RPG, I want to play it however I want, and if I want Fenris to be my elven bottom boy, he damn well will be. Everyone = bi, possibly with mechanics to make one sexual orientation easier to complete the romance with, but never 100% anything.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
I see your point there about same-sex only romances. That's true.

I find M!Hawke/Anders a tad easier, IMO, because with the F!Hawke/Anders it's "I don't want to break your heart, you're so fragile." You still get a little of it with M!Hawke, but not so bad.

and if I want Fenris to be my elven bottom boy, he damn well will be

I love your thinking :)

I love KOTOR and KOTOR2 so much. Now you made me want to play them again, thanks, OP.

KOTOR II is a great game, but very flawed. There's a project to restore the missing content here. http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-sith-lords-restored-content-mod-tslrcm

Can't tell you how it plays since I haven't tried it yet (intend to, eventually), but it looks worth a try!

And setting up your companions could be fun but there would have to be limitations. Maybe in a future BioWare game?

And yes, I agree; the ending was a disaster. Rarely have I played a game with such an unsatisfying ending, but considering the state the rest of the game is in, it isn't entirely surprising.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man I love TSLRCM, it plays fuckin beautifully, and it fixes the ending too! My only real issue with it is that it makes Nar Shaddaa drag on even longer, honestly.

Oh...that doesn't sound appealing. If it fixes the ending and makes the overall game a more enjoyable experience it's totally worth the effort, though. I'm glad to hear you like it so much! :)

Unfortunately, I only have the XBOX version, not the PC. Do you know if there's a way to get cut content on XBOX, or is that not possible?

I don't think so. :( The PC version is quite cheap now, though. If you're still interested maybe you could pick it up later? I got my PC copy as a birthday present last year.

There's been a recent K1-K2 bundle release for PC, supposedly that is compatible with Win 7, not having all the bugs the previous PC editions did.

Aha, I haven't played those games in so long. I have nothing relevant to add except that I agree with you wholeheartedly about Bao-Dur(and to a lesser extent, the Mandalore).

I just wanted to say that I am STOKED to see a secret about my favorite game ever! And I wish there was more romance stuff in there, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I love the format of this secret!

As for the content I'm mostly indifferent, having never played KOTOR 2 (and never actually having played the first KOTOR to completion either).
