They're not the same person. Still, I can see your point, because reading those Mindfang excerpts in your secret now made me like Aranea more even though I do know they are different.

most of the trolls do terrible things like crippling/murdering the fuck out of each other but oh no, mind fang is clearly the worst and no one should like her. yeah, okay.

*shrug* Psychic manipulation of people's actions and emotions is a major squick button for me.

...that's all well in good but Aranea isn't Mindfang. She's a follower of the Sufferer for crying out loud.

Which is why I do like Aranea, even though I can't stop wondering what's going on in her head -- or what happened to her head -- to turn her into Mindfang in the alternate timeline. (Please pardon my tenses for making no sense.) Meenah clearly wouldn't do well with absolute power, Cronus is a creep, Kurloz makes Cronus not look like a creep, and a lot of the others make better impressions as their post-Scratch selves, although a lot of that's presumably having had the chance to grow up. Aranea seems like a perfectly nice person, but under other circumstances she turns into Mindfang. I am suspicious and want to know why. And I kind of want to smack her for not being horrified by Mindfang.

But that wasn't her world. She's a damn follower of the Sufferer, for jegus sake!

That's like saying Superman is a Jerk because in the Red Son Universe he's an oppressive dictator. You can't judge folks on their evil alternate universe selves.

Also, I was very pleased when the dancestors showed up because I thought maybe that would finally get the point across that the ancestors and descendants aren't exact copies of each other and won't behave as such.

...but they are different people, which is part of what makes it funny!

Mindfang wants to make sure you have plenty of exposition about the dubcon.

But they're au versions of each other, raised undress different social circumstances that kinda decide who they turn out to be.

Not that I don't get why you'd find her off putting. I did like that Meenah, for instance, recognized that her Alternian self is so very not admirable that she feels uncomfortable when it's brought up, as if she could actually take credit for any of the things Condesce does.

I got the impression Meenah was on board with everything about Condy until the she found what happened to Mituna's counterpart.

She defintely likes the concept of herself as awesome sexy superqueen, but likes the pratical realities of it a lot less. At least in as far as how she treats a friend. The important note there is that she did in fact "jump ships" at that point.

Given that even genetically-identical twins raised in identical circumstances can turn out different, and their circumstances were very very different, I'm gonna repeat "not the same person". I have no illusions as to what I would have turned into in a situation like Mindfang's.

(Shamefacedly admitting my headcanon is that Mindfang mellowed out and felt bad for what she did by the time Summoner turned up, but still wasn't a great person and probably backslid before the end.)

Also, I'm going to repeat what someone said upthread and say that this is a world in which small children are praised for killing and crippling each other. It warps every one of them to some extent.

Summoner was her Matesprit. If he killed her, there were probably reasons.

We saw a lot of a parallel with the ancestors, so I'm betting, like Tavros, something happened that made him think "i HAVE TO STOP YOU" only he succeeded
