most of the trolls do terrible things like crippling/murdering the fuck out of each other but oh no, mind fang is clearly the worst and no one should like her. yeah, okay.

*shrug* Psychic manipulation of people's actions and emotions is a major squick button for me.

...that's all well in good but Aranea isn't Mindfang. She's a follower of the Sufferer for crying out loud.

Which is why I do like Aranea, even though I can't stop wondering what's going on in her head -- or what happened to her head -- to turn her into Mindfang in the alternate timeline. (Please pardon my tenses for making no sense.) Meenah clearly wouldn't do well with absolute power, Cronus is a creep, Kurloz makes Cronus not look like a creep, and a lot of the others make better impressions as their post-Scratch selves, although a lot of that's presumably having had the chance to grow up. Aranea seems like a perfectly nice person, but under other circumstances she turns into Mindfang. I am suspicious and want to know why. And I kind of want to smack her for not being horrified by Mindfang.

It's literally just that - different circumstances and a different world led her to be a different person. You also have to remember that we see the pre-scratch trolls after they've been stuck at roughly age 19 for eons. They've been over dramatic teens so long a lot of their worse traits have been allowed to fester. Aranea seems to have actively worked for this not to happen - which is how she becomes a devotee of the Sufferer.

Why? Because Troll society is a shit heap.

If you raise someone from their moment of birth constantly telling them a certain set of values is correct then you cannot be surprised that they will take to them. Mindfang grew up on a planet that told her 'you are better than people because your blood is blue. you must trust no one but yourself. expect backstabbing. consent is not a priority. killing is okay.' and with nothing to prove the opposite (and lets face it, it being a danger to deviate from the norm) of course she lived out at least a part of her life according to those norms. Anyone would've done. Aranea on the other hand was never told any of these things. her upbringing was entirely according to different norms. so she also turned into an entirely different person.

As for her not being horrified by Mindfang. Remember they had been in those dreambubbles for basically eons. So first of all, since first learning about Mindfang a load of time has passed most likely, taking away from her initial reaction (which may have been horrified for all we know). Secondly, she studied them. So she probably watched a lot of crazy destructive events unfurl along the timeline of the troll universe. Watching so much horror probably desensitized her to certain things.

I love analyzing this tbh. ahh if I weren't so sleepy I'd talk about it since I've seen some stuff written about this, about how Aranea and Mindfang can really be different incarnations of the same person - there are interesting parallels in their personalities, but they're obviously super, super different. The effect the environment has on base personalities can be so interesting~

Aranea certainly has Mindfang's ego - seriously, paying your friends to listen to you talk? Trouble is Mindfang had nobody to rein it in.

This is what I thought but I'm not sure if I have my facts straight. I'm gonna have to do a bunch of re-reading. If it was mentioned at all, it was probably in Aranea's exposition booth.

Mindfang mentioned that she found the Sufferer's story "compelling," but didn't say much else about it.

in her journal she also snuck in the forbidden symbol in the same page where she admitted that it was forbidden to write it down anywhere, even in personal journals

ARANEA: Many of us on Alternia grew up to 8ecome secret followers of his teachings. Just as many of us now follow them, though I'd say with a 8it more detachment. 8ecause we're dead! Speaking personally, I'd refer to myself as more of a "fan" of his story, and what it represents. 8oth the hidden potential in our friend he never quite found, and the hidden potential in all our people.

This is what I was thinking of. She doesn't say either way if Mindfang became a follower or not. I think it's vague enough to play around with and personally I like hearing different versions and theories.
