Really shitty series premieres

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Can you think of series premieres/pilot episodes of a show you like that are just really frickin' terrible? I think it would be a great to warn people who are curious about getting into a show to take it with a grain of salt when they first start watching.

I thought BSG started off really shaky. I didn't get into it until season 2.

Huh. I guess there are basically two categories of BSG fans: those who didn't like it very much at first, but got more interested as the show's main themes became clearer in the second season, and those like me, who enjoyed the show from the start and liked its basic premises (stranded in space, "OMFG our home planet D:", everything about the Cylons, etc) but were less thrilled about the religious themes that became stronger in later seasons. (*cough* Says I, who has only watched up to "Torn" or so.)

I really appreciate the character development everyone gets, though, especially Tigh's and Baltar's. I found Baltar so incredibly annoying from the beginning, and I didn't really feel he got better until the "Pegasus"/"Resurrection Ship" arc.

Phineas and Ferb comes to mind. Rollercoaster was terrible.

They made up for it with Rollercoaster: The Musical though. But really, don't bother watching Phineas and Ferb from the start.

This may not count, but if I had seen the unaired pilot of The Last Airbender (Why is this always my go to series in these threads), I wouldn't have watched further.

Vampire Diaries, most definitely. And I'm not fond of the first episode of Bob's Burgers, though the rest has been pure gold.

This isn't limited to just the pilot because the whole show underwent some major corporate WTFery but I can't stop thinking about SouthLAnd in this context. The first season (7 eps) is nothing like the rest of the show. And it's good but not good enough to really hold interest. But everything that came after was absolutely amazing and it seems to just keep getting better which is the exact opposite of my experiences with other shows.

Personally, i think the first season is just as awesome as the rest, so it's a matter of perspective. It is a really very cool, but a bit disturbing and, yes, 'gritty' show, so do be prepared.

The first season of the Office was iffy. The second season is a much better one to start off with.

I feel like that's true for most shows I watch.

Parks and Rec comes to mind, certainly, although that's more the whole first season.

the first season was terrible but it's my favorite show of all time.

Mystery Science Theater 3000's whole first season, which aired on a cable access channel, was pretty shaky. I think there's a few good episodes in there (Phase IV and Superdome, for example), but it's kind of understandable why Joel et al don't want to to be released.

Honestly, a lot of shows I like started off kind of iffy. Community* and Parks were already mentioned, Happy Endings started off pretty weak -- even Seinfeld was actually super unpopular and low-rated its first season.

Also, I started with season three of Due South and watched s1-2 after 3-4 and I tend to recommend other people do the same, because I never would have watched it myself had I started with the pilot.

(*Although I'm actually in the minority of liking s1 Community best, but it certainly didn't start off as the show it turned into.)

I loved the Happy endings pilot. That restaurant scene alone sold me. I'm so sad the show is doing so poorly now.

I hate how much it's struggling. I don't get people who say it's not as funny anymore. The last few episodes have been hilarious. :(

Me too! S2 is so perfect and S3 has its moments too (Boys II Menorah XD) and idk I just don't want their shenanigans to end.

I will admit I was not feeling season 3 for about the first half but the last few episodes have been really good.

I have still been watching though because even when Happy Endings is not completely on point it's still better then much of what is on tv.

Ditto. I loved pretty much everything about the Happy Endings first season and liked the second season so little that I actually stopped watching and haven't looked back.

I am having trouble of thinking of truly shitty ones, but a lot of shows start off really weird and their tone completely changes once the show gets going.

Psych is one, while I didn't consider it bad they had a whole different cop actress and they were writing Carlton a lot differently. Shawn was also very "every snarky lead in every tv show" and not really his own character yet.

Cougar Town is another though the first half the the first season is entirely weird, the original concept for the show was just not something they wanted to do long term and it quickly became about a group of friends rather then a single older woman starting over (and tbh I am glad they changed it, I was fine with early Cougar Town but it probably would have worn on me quickly.)

If we're going to talk about unaired pilots then the Buffy one is definitely strange.

And if we're going to talk about how FOX messes up, the original Dollhouse pilot was better then the one that aired, and Serenity really should have been the first to air for Firefly.
