I guess it depends on where in the fandom you are -- there are lots of little not-quite-splinter-groups depending on the favorite characters/ships/whatever of the people involved. I just got lucky enough to fall into one where there are a lot of really good, friendly writers who aren't elitist and don't go mucking in 'ship wars.
