There are no negative consequences directly affecting her in any way for her horrible personality/attitude/abuse of others. At this point I'm convinced that she can slit someone's throat and no one will care because they think Haruhi is awesome

Now you're clearly making this up. I can understand if you didn't find her development believable; I thought it was rushed too, but I thought it was already made obvious from the last few episodes that she's not the same self-centered person she used to be in the first half of the series.
