Anyone here watching this?

Very good chance of being a contender for best anime of the year.

I just looked this anime up and it looks pretty interesting. Are there awesome female characters in it? (If so I need to watch it.)

With reservations, yes.

Akane and Yayoi (the main women) are fairly paint by numbers, newbie cop, and stoic but troubled professional respectively. They play the roles well enough, but the most interesting is one of the antagonists early in the series.

Spoilers in reply.

Spoilers

[f!s ate my first post, so this is a quick rehash]

The first major arch shifts gears by going from what could easily pass for decent Ghost in the Shell episodes to centring around a yuri subplot in a school.

It runs to the hilt with the standard, posh private schoolgirls in an entirely female school, blazers, properly 'ladylike' hobbies like painting and theatre, along with the dynamic of a popular sempai worshipped by kouhai. It even keeps the dynamic of the one in the position of power preying upon their subordinates.

Except Yuri is fundamentally about romance without the physical threat of sex. It is harmless exploration by school girls before they graduate into the real world shedding their innocence, and disappearing from the story entirely before they can impose with an actual sexuality, or the messy reality of real people. Indeed, even the characters themselves seem to lack any real sense of personality outside playing a pre-set narrative.

In every way it's not the subversive exploration of homosexuality one would hope for, rather perpetuating idealised feminine norms.

The antagonist violates all of this. The art and theatre she indulges in only serve to reflect her obsession, and defy the standardised works or plays one would expect. Whilst the driving force behind her is suggested to be following in her fathers footsteps, he is almost literally a non-character, a living prop for her to impose her own perceptions of his views upon.

She uses all the power given to her through the role she is set up to play towards indulging in her whims, and violates the entire concept of yuri when the women she pursues actually end up bound in her bed. And she rails against the entire system set towards producing girls as idealised products for men to marry, a piece of the perfect lifestyle, rather then individuals in their own right.

All throughout her intelligence, drive, and critically her failings are explored making for a rounded complicated character.

I was wondering why you had said "spoilers in reply." I was thinking I had missed something ><;

I feel rather stupid as it took me a few reads to understand what you meant. But from the basis of what you said, the antagonist is a well-rounded lesbian character who goes against images of "yuri" characters in other anime. (Unless I missed something.)

That arch sounds interesting. Thanks for the in-depth reply!

Thanks for reminding me :)
