I think it's because of the Disney Princesses line. They get a lot of merchandising and exposure and love. Basically, being called a Disney princess means recognition that a character is awesome, and that's why people want disctinctly un-princessly characters to be called princess, as near as I can figure.

I think that's kind of sad. I wish they had multiple lines for ladies. Or just changed it to "Disney Girls" or something.
