The Host movie

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I just saw this trailer for the movie The Host:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRKjf8b4f2E

Parasitic aliens taking over people's bodies to take over earth and an underground resistance of still-free humans is a premise that really interests me. But it says in the trailer it's based on a book by Stephanie Myer and I'm worried the story will be bogged down with the same problems that turned me off Twilight.

Anybody else have any thoughts or opinions?

Watch the Korean movie instead.

Korean movie? With the same title? Did they get the rights to the book first, or did Myer write a clone of a pre-existing movie's plot?

Sorry, guess I should've been a bit more specific... There's a Korean movie from 2006 that had the international title The Host -- the original title meant Monster, if memory serves. It has absolutely nothing to do with this new movie (disclaimer: all I know about that one is that it's written by the so called author of the Twilight books, and that's enough for me).

Oh, lol. :D Well, I'll look it up anyway. Is it really good on it's own or just in a 'better than twilight' way? Yeah, I agree about knowing it's being by the Twilight author is a good enough excuse to avoid anything, but I think this premise is enough to tempt me to give it the benefit of the doubt and at least rent it when it's available for that. Who knows, good acting and some script changes might save it. :)

I've been meaning to read that book for quite some time, since everyone I know who's read it said it was much, much better than Twilight. Although I suppose that's not saying much.

You should read it. I think it's good.

The aliens are basically the twilight vampires in alien form. They're special super perfect sparkle bugs that are ~so much better than the rest of the universe~ that they take over hosts and live their life for them. "Wanderer", a special sparkly bug~ gets into the protag, an under-aged teenage girl. They share a body, until the end, where she takes over the body of a lifeless fifteen year old.

Oh, and they both have 21+ boyfriends. And wanderer pretends to be older so the guy will bone her. Yep.

...ok, that sounds about as skeevy as Twilight. Damn. I want to say "if it's just Edward and Bella part deux I'll pass", but I really like the alien parasite premise so I'll probably give the movie a try and hope for a better translation to film.

I read The Host soon after it released, out of curiosity, and I DO think it was written better than Twilight. I found the world building of The Host more developed. It has the same sort of character dynamics, though, so it wasn't really my cup of tea.

HOWEVER, I will be watching the movie for Jake Abel's fine face. ;)

Ugh, I'm so disappionted about the character dynamics, but I love good world building and alien parasites so I think I'll try it and hope they changed it enough for the movie to be bearable.

And Jake Abel's face is definitely a good excuse to watch it as well. :)

I read and enjoyed The Host. Not a literary classic by any means, but def better than Twilight and, imo, enjoyable on its own merits. And it focuses less on the romance and more on the aliens and weird psychological things.

I have my reservations about the movie, but I'm sure I'll go watch it. It certainly doesn't look like the trainwreck that was Twilight (I didn't see any of those, the trailers looked to horrible)

That gives me a little more hope for this movie, that it will live up to some of the potential of that fantastic alien plot.

(I suggest you keep not seeing the Twilight movies. I watched the first one as a favor to my sister and can honestly say they're 10x worse than the trailers make them seem, hence my wariness of this new movie)

If I ever do watch one it will be to laugh at the terribad. I've been meaning to watch The Last Airbender for a while now for that same reason.

I finished the book today and I really liked it, surprisingly. I don't get what people are saying, that it's at all similar to Twilight. It's really not.

I'm not sure what to expect from the film, since the trailers seem to be switching a few things up... but the director/screenwriter is the guy who made Gattaca, so I've got some hope!

the book was kinda... Twilight-esque. We'll see. The sci-fi backdrop could be elevated with teh right writer/director.

I say if you want to watch teenagers fighting alien brain-bugs, watch The Faculty. It's got a great cast and it's delightfully snarky/tongue-in-cheek.
