I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Disney's not obligated to spend millions of dollars making merch that no one but a couple of hardcore fans are going to buy. Even the actual Disney Princesses have merchandise sorted on who is most popular--Ariel and Cinderella have tons, because they're the most popular amongst little girls.

The entire franchise was conceived when one of the Disney execs attended a Disney on Ice showing, and realized that so many girls already came as them. I don't doubt for a second that if Disney felt including Kida would be profitable she would be there.

Disney did try doing a Disney Heroes and Disney Villains thing, but those simply weren't popular enough and were abandoned.

I think it's kind of a cause and effect clusterfuck thing. Sorry, that's what I was trying to get at. Yes, they were very popular but I feel like there are popular movies, like Mulan, that don't really fit the princess thing but get stuck with that label because Disney doesn't want to risk marketing it as something else. I can understand why. I do. I just think that part of the reason why the princesses are popular is also due to how well they are marketed. If they spent just as much time marketing maybe a bit more inclusive thing, like "Disney Girls/Women" I think I would be a bit happier.

Kida comes from a movie that didn't do very well, as far as I remember. Therefore, I don't expect her to be as well marketed as, say, Belle. I think that's sad and disappointing, but not something I can see a solution for.

I'm less ragging on Disney for doing the smart marketing thing and more just frustrated with it because of certain ideas it perpetuates. I honestly don't have a solution other than maybe trying to make it more inclusive, but I'm not going to blame Disney if they don't do that. Nor am I going to blame the people who love and support the princess line. I'm just... frustrated I guess. Not at anyone in particular, just at the problem itself.

Ahh, I see. That's a very good point. Mulan was a popular movie, but unfortunately Mulan herself doesn't fit in the line-up at all, so Disney ends up doing some odd things with her. Same with Pocahontas--no fancy dresses, not really a one true love...she's almost never included because she sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the other girls.

Yeah, I've even seen them try to fit Alice in sometimes. It's super weird.

I guess all I, or any of us, can really do is wait to see where Disney takes the line. It can't last forever, though I see it having great longevity. But when it does go we'll see what it gets reinvented as, or replaced with.

Yeah, it's always really strange to me to see Alice. She's 1. not a princess and 2. a very young child, so...what?

It's because she's popular, she's Disney, and she's a girl. Hence why I think they should really relabel it Disney Girls/Women or whatever.

I think they'd go with "Disney Heroines" if anything.

Oooo! I like that. Yes! Let's go with that one!
