You are the second person I have met in my life who has identified as such ... is there a difference between Catholic and Roman Catholic? (I admit that I did not have the guts to ask that IRL, so.)

There's a very marginal technical difference (within the context of the Catholic Church, there's a few different autonomous churches "in full communion with" Roman Catholicism that follow somewhat different liturgical traditions, mostly various Eastern rite churches that never split with Rome - the Ukrainian Church, the Armenian Church, etc). But for all intents and purposes, no, there's no difference, just another word for the same thing - almost all Catholics are Roman Catholics.
