Re: GC Challenge Post! Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations

OP

Do you mind me asking just how Pentecostal? Did your church follow the speaking-in-non-language-syllables Pentecostal thing? (I hope you are not offended by my wording it that way, but I believe speaking in tongues literally means being able to suddenly speak fluently in other actual languages you have never learned.) Did you ever hear someone doing it? Did you do it yourself? (This is all asked very respectfully, by the way!)

Yep! My church advocated speaking in tongues. I've experience it myself though now I believe it was purely psychological. We were told to maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and if the Holy Spirit is truly in your heart, you'll be blessed with tongues. It was an interesting experience looking back.

OP

That does sound like an interesting experience, thanks for replying! I hope you don't mind if I follow up with some other questions.

Did you do the Pentecostal speaking in tongues in front of your church (i.e., the same as preaching only doing that instead)? Were you a child when that happened? Was there anyone who interpreted what you were saying to the others?

Not a problem! :)

No, I stayed at the pews. It was sort of a group activity where you all do your own prayers and if you had the urge to speak in tongues, you just let it happen. Not everyone did it, so it was all very disorganized but the point was communicating with God individually. Sometimes there would be an interpretation, not always. I was in my teens when I spoke in tongues and I had no idea what I was saying.
