Re: GC Challenge Post! Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations
(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 02:58 am (UTC)(link)Hi, thanks for replying! It has been my experience (and a bad experience it was but ymmv) that agnostic and atheist are considerably different states of mind. At least, my state of mind was very different when I chose to be agnostic, and then it was very different again, when I chose to be an atheist (I am neither at this point btw) Can I ask (respectfully) why you identify as both?
Re: GC Challenge Post! Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations
(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 06:11 am (UTC)(link)Agnosticism and atheism are not mutually-exclusive positions. They are answers to two entirely separate questions; agnosticism is about knowledge, while atheism is about belief.
As an agnostic, I hold the position that it is impossible (either currently, or ever) to have certain knowledge of whether any gods exist. For me, this is because of the inherently unfalsifiable nature of most claims about gods.
As an atheist, I do not have a belief that any God or gods exist in reality.
These two positions are entirely compatible, and I can easily hold both at the same time -- I cannot have certain knowledge of whether gods exist or not, but see no reason to believe that they do at this time.
