god i hate it when i find out someone from a band i like is a horrible person

first i find out dave mustaine's a big flappy homophobe and a racist, and then i foudn out about this

i haven't listened to megadeth since, and i used to really like megadeth

This is the fear I have with any band/artist I love. I haven't stepped on any land mines yet, and fingers crossed I never will ;_;

Hmm yeah that's always a bummer, but I find there are enough good bands out there that aren't made of shitty people to like that it doesn't feel like much of a loss.

And any artists I really really love, I kind of know what they're about to begin with. You can tell with the lyrics of the music or an couple of interviews.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never been into bandom because all I want to know about a band is how good their album is.

I feel like it's not necessary to do anything outside of that, but I also think our culture is over saturated with "OMG I MUST KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS CELEBRITY!!!"

Like, we can't just like people for the art they produce anymore?

This secret could have been written by me.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally think it's helpful to keep in mind that the people who make music are neither gods nor music-dispensing machines, but flesh-and-blood humans with all the messiness that entails.

Wait, what.

Dance Gavin Dance has a fandom.

On one hand, yay, people like them, on the other hand, it's probably nonstop stories of what an asshole Jonny Craig is. I thought I had accepted it... but it's still so raw.

LA LA LA as a budding fan of DGD I CAN'T HEAR YOU

Normally I'd be arguing with this secret but no, now I totally agree, dang

[personal profile] unicornherds 2013-02-17 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry OP, bandom is not meant to be understood. It just is.

I've never understood wanting to know personal information about the members of bands you're into. 9 times out of 10, I couldn't even tell you the names of most of the band members.

I just want to listen to the music.
That's ALL I care about.

I hate knowing the original intention behind songs, too.
Ugh. Way to kill my mental interpretation.
"This song isn't about being in an argumentative and sometimes violent relationship with your partner, it's about some girl who gets beaten and raped by her boyfriend."
Thank you for ruining that for me, forever.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa, what song was that?
inkdust: (Default)

[personal profile] inkdust 2013-02-18 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's why 9 times out of 10 I avoid music videos and often even avoid seeing photos of musicians if I can help it. I don't want to picture them singing the song when I hear it, and I don't want their intent to crowd my interpretation. Exceptions, of course.

Nah, I don't blame you. The less I know about a band and/or a singer, the better, even if I find I agree with them on certain issues/topics.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
stupid question time: isn't being in bandom an entirely separate interest from their music?

Or you can find out their assholes the hard way. Like I did.

I know it's weird, but probably 95% of the time (there's an occasional exception,) I just don't get why anyone is a fan of people as opposed to the things that they do or produce. I tend not to care what celebrities do in real life even if they're the people behind my favorite stuff, and I'll still read, watch or listen to anything I think is good, whether the actor/author/singer is some horrific travesty of a human being or not. The art is not the artist.

Our Lady Peace has a fandom...? I actually didn't know they'd put out albums since 2002 until this secret prompted me to go check, so I mean good on them for still making music. But like do people nowadays even still know any of their music?

This is the reason I tend to not delve into the lives of actors, musicians, etc. I want to always believe that the cast of my favorite shows are friends with each other and that they love working together, etc. I like to hold onto my naivete in that regard.

Well, most the time the fans are just projecting their own fantasy on the band members, and so who the members really are doesn't matter to them.

I'm not really into bandom, but I feel you, OP. I try to apply "death of the author" in all my fandoms. I don't really want to dig into the lives of authors or actors or anyone else involved in providing my mediums, because I hate finding out unsavory details about them. All that does is diminish my enjoyment.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just so taken back by someone using the OLP: Happiness... album for a secret! How awesome. It was such an important album to me, I loved them all the way through Gravity. The members of the band are pretty great, too, did you have a bad experience with them?

OP

To be honest, sometimes I don't even want to know what the "real meaning" of a song is.

Most recent example being "Try" by P!nk. I took it as simple heartbreak but continuing to be open to new love, loved it for that. Learn about the music video and realize it's more about persisting in a relationship that's borderline if not outright abusive. Instant UGH.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even know the names of all band members of my favourite bands, let alone what they look like and details about their personal life, so it always is a bit baffling to me when people know every musician's birthday and the names of all their past and present partners, pets and family members.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
This so much! But for me it goes for any type of entertainer. I'm interested in their work, not their personal lives.
