I liked that character too. I also found the teen love story to be pretty unnecessary; I appreciate that the movie tried something different, but I really, really hate that so many horror/monster movies are going in the direction of romances these days. And teen romances, at that.

/only went to see this movie because her bf watches every zombie movie in existence

...might try reading the book then. The love story makes so much more sense and the backstory explains why Julie's father idea of survival is, uh, not even close. (No way they were ever getting kids dissecting 'living' zombies was ever going to make it the movie and stay at the rating it is)
