I think this secret and all the replies are kind of funny. Everyone on the show says 'Downton'. It's...not the same word. Doesn't *sound* the same. I just...don't get the confusion.

Well, I don't watch the show. :) To uninformed me, it always sounded like it was "Downtown" when people mentioned it, and I never bothered to look it up. I'm betting a lot of people are in a similar boat.

Yea, same for me. I don't watch it but once my mom started to I caught bits here and there and realized my mistake.

I would imagine most people making that error aren't watching the show, or made it before they started watching. I don't watch and it took me months to realize what the real name was because I never heard it said.

You need to track down some movies/TV from other English-speaking regions to get a broader idea of English As She Is Spoke.

'-town' being pronounced '-ton' is extremely common.

sorry, i'm just imagining 'let's go to ton' in my head and can't help but cracking up.

I've never heard of this Let'sgototown. Where is it?

My family made the mistake when we first saw commercials for it on PBS, but we stopped making that mistake once we started watching. "Downtown" is just a more intuitive word, especially for Americans who live in cities' metropolitan areas (as I do).

Because obviously, everyone everywhere watches the show, and hasn't just heard/read of it.
